Animal Man is ending soon, but Jeff Lemire is going out swinging.  Animal Man #28 is a treat for long time readers and the art and colors by Rafael Albuquerque and Dave McCaig makes it great to look at as well.  It's not new reader friendly, but if you haven't read Animal Man yet, just go back to the beginning and start reading.  Those up to speed will love this issue. It's hard not to become emotionally invested in these characters as Lemire roots the stories deeply within the Baker family and how driven they are by their love and emotions. He writes them with such strong care and passion that it's obvious why he wanted to end the series on his own terms. After everything they've gone through, the Bakers deserve some happiness and at least for now, no matter what comes next, they are together. These were the final pages to a chapter of their lives, it wasn't the first and it surely won't be the last, but for now it's time to close the book. Read Full Review

Overall, Animal Man will be leaving on a high level next month regardless of where Buddy ends up. He proved he is the hero his family needed during this issue. Hopefully, Buddy can get the ending that every hero deserves. Read Full Review

Lemire has put an end to the action, now he only needs to put a bow on everything so we can have some type of closure. This issue was a great reminder of what made me fall in love with Animal Man in the first place. Its going to be depressing to see this series go. Read Full Review

I was disappointed, however, by Albuquerques art, which is usually superb. The lack of backgrounds throughout the book really hurt the story. The final battle is happening in the Red, which would be a golden opportunity for some really bizarre and beautiful backgrounds and instead we get no backgrounds at all for a whole slew of pages. Its odd, and I dont know if it was a choice, but it makes the book feel rushed. Its a sizeable let down for what is otherwise a celebration of a strong run for the character. Read Full Review

"Animal Man" #28 is another solid issue, and while I'm sad to see the series about to wrap up, it is good to know that Lemire will continue to write Animal Man's adventures beyond the conclusion of this comic.
