The series has always managed to resonate with readers even in the craziest of situations. This is due to the Baker family and the strong emotional core they've provided for the series. No matter how crazy things have gotten, they've always been relatable and likeable, and the family interactions have been just a memorable as the story. Some stories are meant to end, and by god, Animal Man #29 ends things perfectly. This is the only way it could have happened, tying everything together and sending us through a roller coaster of emotions, all while bringing the original artist back. However, there are still emotional threads left hanging. The loss of Cliff led to a downward spiral of despair for the Bakers and it takes the wisdom of a small child to help Buddy and the audience experience some much-needed catharsis. Lemire himself illustrates a story told by Maxine. His illustrations are appropriately child-like, and they help to give a satisfying emotional conclusion. That said, some fans may be a bit perturbed that a major, and recently introduced, element of this story is left hanging to be explored in Lemire's next project, Justice League United. Animal Man #29 is a quiet, but beautifully told finale to what was one of the New 52′s best series ever released. It had emotion, had character depth, brought almost everything to a close perfectly, and had wonderful artwork as well. While Animal Man will not be gone (he and Lemire will be back for Justice League United), his series will be and it is an honest shame. I will miss this comic a lot for all its good and sad times. I really love this character and I really hope that at some point I get another Animal Man series written by another great writer. "Animal Man" was a well-written series that was self-contained for the most part ("Swamp Thing" made the best companion). In conclusion, it was one of the better story and character driven comics the New 52 had to offer. Hats off to Jeff Lemire's "Animal Man." Fans that have been consistently following Animal Man since Lemire began will be shocked to discover an issue with such a high amount of emotional depth. This title concludes with a profound emotional symphony of loss. Thank goodness that this family is resting until Justice League: United, where Buddy’s family will hopefully not be seen. This final issue serves as a warm reminder. It's like the night before graduation and you're sitting on the hood of your buddy's car drinking a beer saying "Hey, remember that time..." The memories flow out of you. You think about where you'll be next year. What's going to happen? But you take comfort in knowing that you'll always have the past, even while you are thrust into new beginnings. This isn't the last we'll see of Buddy Baker or Animal Man. This isn't even the last time Lemire will write him. This wasn't a run without any faults but it's important to relish the good stories because you don't know when you'll get the next one. Overall, Lemire and Foreman delivered a conclusion to their run of "Animal Man" with style and grace and emotion and while it might not be the type of finale to throw one last wrench into the mix to surprise readers, that doesn't make it any less of an effective ending. Seeing how far the family of the Bakers have come since that #1 over two years ago really made this issue something special. Overall, Animal Man was a must read each month and had so many great stories and really understood the raw emotional factor. This may be the final issue of this series, but its certainly not an ending, and theres a great deal of comfort to be found in that thought. Animal Man has, for nearly three years, been one of the best examples of how DC used its new launch as a way to take chances and prosper from them. As a creative endeavor, this title has been a proud addition to DCs history. But more importantly, as a story of one man and the love he has for his family, its been a joy to read every month. And with her tale, Maxine helps her father come to terms with the loss of his son. We get a final moment where Buddy shows the way he chooses to honor Cliff, and then its over. While Im a little sad we didnt get more issues of Lemires vision for Buddy, Im consoled by the fact that Buddy will be heading over to Lemires Justice League book, and itll be interesting to see him continue the story of the Bakers. I'll enjoy seeing Animal Man again in the new Justice League United book, and I'm sure he'll bring his family along with him. Lemire and trusted artist Travel Foreman stay within the lanes of the series with infectious beauty, using Lil' Wing as a vehicle to tell her daddy a bedtime story with Lemire's dreamlike scribbles to boot. ANIMAL MAN #29 isn't the perfect was to close up a series, but it was still a delightful read. It was great seeing Foreman back on this book, even if he isn't spending the whole time horrifying the reader with some creepy art, and Lemire's section of the book works perfectly for the issue. While his section is pretty much just recapping the entire series, it was a solid read. It really sucks to see this book go, since it was one of the best solo books at DC comics, but it goes out in an enjoyable and moving way. Overall, I highly recommend this issue. Read Full Review

In essence, Lemire closes the book not only on his own adventures with Animal Man, but also wraps up the adventures Grant Morrison opened so many years ago and, hopefully, ushers in a new era for Buddy, Ellen and Maxine Baker. There won't be another Animal Man series in the foreseeable future, but Lemire will be keeping in touch with his former charge in the pages of the upcoming "Justice League United." I look forward to some actual superhero adventures from Animal Man, but will always have "Animal Man" #29 to return to, much as I do "The Coyote Gospel" in Morrison's "Animal Man" #5. I won't lie, I got a little choked up with the ending, as I found a superhero but is not as popular as all the rest but one that was a lot more inspiring to me. The entire series from start to finish was an amazing read and I hope Lemire brings the great story telling in Animal Man to Justice League United. A summary of the whole series, and a painful reminder of how great the series was in the beginning followed by its slow decent into laboriousness. Lemire got so caught up in the Red, he forgot that things need to happen in comic books. At least one thing per issue.
