On Comics Ground - Reed Strong Oct 28, 2017

This issue, oddly enough, felt like the television series Batman Beyond. This has largely been a book thats been mostly focused on integration; taking the things we like about Batman Beyond and merging those elements with the greater DCU, as well as the other way around. And its been a really good book, exploring whats changed in Neo-Gotham and especially how Terry interacts with it. But something about the self-contained nature of this issue really hit that three-act structure the show did so well, as well as giving some lime-light to a fan favorite villain with the redemption of Shriek. Chang's artwork is spot on, as he is a familiar name in the title. He knows the character, the setting and could be a welcome addition as writer of the series, should ongoing Dan Jurgens ever choose to step down permanently. Read Full Review

Bernard Chang did a stellar job on this issue, giving us an exciting story with a unique structure and skillful art. If this issue is any indication, DC should consider giving him further opportunities to write. Read Full Review

I had to read Batman #13 multiple times, and flip back and forth through the issue trying to connect the pieces together. My outlook on the story shifted from: "God this was a hot mess!" to "I mean" I see what he's trying to do, but he failed miserably." Then finally, "Alright, now that I've identified and followed each individual narrative, it's not as bad as I initially thought it was." So, prepare yourself before you dive into this chapter" It's going to take some effort, and quite frankly, most casual readers won't pick this issue up a second time (or more for that matter) to try and puzzle the plots together. They're going to read it once, form their opinion, then move on to their next book. Read Full Review

Man, did I have problems following this story because of the panel layout and found most of it just pointless filler that didn't do anything to improve what was going on and where I could follow it, it didn't seem to make much sense.  The art is still fantastic though, but Bernard Chang's writing left a lot to be desired. Really not as bad as everyone is saying and if it is that hard to follow for you... I kind of feel bad. While it was set up a lot different then most comics, it was a fun quick read with no real meaning. Art was pretty solid.

This issue was terrible. The layouts were a complete mess and the story wasn't compelling enough to go back and try to figure what panels to read in what order. Chang is an artist by trade and it looks like he should stick to that. I'm surprised how hard it has been for DC to make Batman Beyond good. You literally can do whatever you want with this character without screwing up too much past continuity since Terry isn't bound by that. Batman Beyond was Bruce Timm's stroke of genius and so far the writers for this title haven't been up to snuff.

Sad to say but this issue was a complete mess. Definitely do not waste your money on it.
