This feels like one of the most balanced and cohesive issues of Gotham Academyyet: the pace moves along nicely, multiple cast members share fun dialogue, and the story has the right mix of serious and lighthearted. Olive continues to intrigue us as she teases out the secrets surrounding her mom. Cloonan and Fletcher create an engaging mystery that readers of all ages can enjoy. Gotham Academy is the book that keeps on giving. This was a book I had previously written off for trade waiting, but I dont think I can ever get enough at this point. Gotham Academy takes pieces of Gotham City and brings them into new light and new mysteries, and the characters in this story are nothing short of magical. The outlook of the series might have changed a little bit with this issue, but the quality has not. Especially as this seems to be somewhat of the end state for this first overall story arc of the series, a lot of different approaches could have been taken to get here, but none would have created such a sizable depth of characterizations for those only ten issues into their publication histories. This issue is the start of uncovering some of the mysteries surrounding one of our major characters, but at the same time has aconcurrentstory that features all the characters and their charming personalities. Gotham Academy#9 has a wonderful balance of haunting painted art and expressive cartooning from artist Karl Kerschl along with a symbolically powerful eerie blue and fire red palette from Serge Lapointe and Msassyk. Gotham Academy #9 is a fantastic continuation of what is already a great series. It has its awkwardmoments, although they are smoothed outa good bit compared toprevious issues, and I'd try to push it on anyone that enjoys your standard highschool drama romp. My main problemis thatthroughout this run, Olive doesn't have an outstanding personality to call her own and I think that she could benefit from an experience like issue 7 to flesh her out for the readers. I look forward to seeing how the story will go in the future and hope that those bronze-age style covers #5 and #6 had will make a glorious come-back for the end of this arc as well. Gotham Academy nudges things along in some good ways here while offering some creepy teases in the woods that hints at greater discoveries ahead. Hopefully in the next issue in fact. For me, what makes this issue succeed more than the story itself is seeing the way the kids are operating together after starting out in such opposite corners from each other outside of Maps and Olive. While this wasn't my favorite issue of Gotham Academy, the strong points of the story manage to overcome the problem areas enough that it was still a worthwhile read. In the greater scheme of things, I didn't get the sense that this particular issue was all that detrimental, but it was a necessary stepping stone to progress the story. This book is very Scooby Doo'ish. School kids hunting monsters. It looks like the main girl has some powers or maybe will have them soon. The books had good pacing and kept me interested. Can't fault it for what it is. The art is great and the story was really well written. Read Full Review
