BLACKEST NIGHT EVENT part 14 of 79!
The battle continues on Oa as the honored dead of the Green Lantern Corps and the recently deceased Sciencell convicts who lost their lives in the riots have all become Black Lanterns and will not rest until the bloody hearts and minds of the Green Lanterns are literally in their hands. Kyle Rayner, Guy Gardener and John Stewart resort to their most brutal fighting yet as the Blackest Night threatens to envelop Sector Zero and send the universe reeling into chaos!
If the script nods off a little in places, at least the art is as strong as ever. Patrick Gleason is a master of epic layouts and generally dynamic storytelling. His one flaw - an inconsistency in facial work, is far less prevalent here than in many issues. So far it appears Blackest Night will be showcasing Gleason at his best. Hopefully the same will be said for Tomasi in the end. Make no mistake - I enjoyed this issue a lot. The scope of the conflict is certainly there, but the pacing lacks some of the breakneck speed of The Sinestro Corps War. Hopefully the next issue will speed things along. Read Full Review
Green Lantern Corps #40 was another solid issue in Peter Tomasi's run on this title. Tomasi did an excellent job capturing the big event aspect of Blackest Night that the main series has. Though I don't think this issue is a must read to understand Blackest Night it does help further the story for those interested in the event. Read Full Review
If you are reading the Blackest Night series then there is no excuse for you not to be reading Green Lantern Corps right now. This book is a great example of how larger plots and small subplots should be woven within a single book. I've only been reading Green Lantern Corps for the past few months, but the characters are great and the writing is solid enough that it's probably going to keep me on the book for the long haul beyond Blackest Night. By the end it's just an amazing work and probably my favorite tie-in thus far in terms of the overall Blackest Night crossover. I'm hoping that once this is all over Tomasi can start taking the team into some epic directions as he's proven himself more than capable as a writer with this title. Read Full Review
One odd thing in this issue is the Green Lantern infirmary: Oa is suppose to be one of the most technologically-advanced planets in the universe and yet their infirmary looks like just another military field hospital-- complete with cots lined up in a large hall. This book is largely the story of a military unit at war but surely they could have come up with something more futuristic. Read Full Review

I'm not completely disenfranchised with the Blackest Night yet and this issue wasn't nearly as bad as my more general commentary on the state of Blackest Night so far would have you believe, but I am holding out that things shift away from all this death and repeat deadlovedonesencounter stories that we've been getting nonstop in every tiein and issue of the event so far. "Green Lantern Corps" #40 might not be new-reader friendly, but it is a payoff to people who have read "Green Lantern Corps" for the past year or two. Considering that so many of the "Green Lantern Corps" stories have moved into the "Blackest Night" mini-series, though, it's a little apt that "Green Lantern Corps" gets to serve just itself for once.
