TOM KING AND RAFAEL DE LATORRE'S SERIES HEATS UP, AS PENGUIN PLOTS HIS REVENGE! The Penguin knows that to return to power in Gotham City he's going to need a crew that's not based in the city or caught up in the Gotham War...so he makes a play for a surprising group. Enter, the Force of July!
We don't know these characters too wellthey were largely all just bit characters and kind of jokesbut King does an excellent job of introducing us to them in only 20 pages, before setting them up for a nightmarish ride that is likely to get worse with every new recruit Penguin finds. King is developing Penguin on a slow burn. After an urgent introduction to set up the main story, the series is proceeding very deliberately by putting pieces in place and building up Oswald. In that way Penguin #3 is a must-read and also a great issue for new readers to check out. Read Full Review
The Penguin #3 is another fantastic issue of a comic that has “best of the year” qualities about it. Each issue has delivered in unexpected ways. It has added layers to the character of the Penguin elevating him from his trick umbrella past. Most importantly, it has given us a character that you feel empathy towards while also being completely frightened by. It's one that shouldn't be missed. Read Full Review
Now that Penguin has his goons and his firepower I assume that next issue, we will see the Force of July in action. I am enjoying this series more than I thought, and I am excited to see what is next. Read Full Review
It's time for this title to advance beyond Penguin building up a new army. While the unexpected return of Force of July was cool, it'd be nice for the story to start going somewhere significant. And soon. Read Full Review
De Latorre makes up for the lack of compelling story with awesome and beautifully detailed art. Read Full Review
While this issue has been the weakest in the run so far, it's still a very good comic that brings in some secondary characters that I'm sure will become important at a later date. Read Full Review
Even though the issue saves its best sequence for last, before a cute denouement, it loses much of its effect coming at the end of a very familiar pattern. Read Full Review
This is shaping up to be my least favorite project written by Tom King in a long time. With this whole first arc being a boring recruitment plot meant to build up to what I assume will be another overdramatic attack on Gotham, I've lost interest. With the exception of my continued enjoyment of Rafael De Latorre's art, all the goodwill issue one of this series brought me has by now evaporated. I'll just keep buying Wonder Woman for my King fix and hope he moves on from this project soon. Read Full Review
I had no idea who this team is prior to this comic, but whoever they are, I love this interpretation of them! Each character is really unique and interesting, I like the different recruiting approaches for each, and the writing continues to be on point. Really excited about this book!
Not quite up to the heights of the previous issue, but still a good one. For the most part, I liked the introductions for each member of the Force of July, with my favorites being Sparkler and Silent Majority. I'm looking forward to seeing where this group goes as this series progresses.
