Dynamite Entertainment presents a bold new experiment in graphic storytelling, as the biggest female stars in the worlds of prose, television, gaming and comics gather together to tell thrilling stories from the life of Red Sonja, which combine to make up her greatest adventure yet! This issue includes stories by Gail, Bram Stoker Award Winner Nancy A. Collins, and beloved Batman scribe, Devin Grayson, all braided together by an epic framing story told by Red Sonja scribe Gail Simone! This book is designed to appeal not just to fans of Sonja, but also the countless readers of these talented writers!
What more is there to be said about this excellent collaboration between three fantastic writers who know the character of Red Sonja as well as they know themselves? The tale fits together like two oars and a boat. The art though varied is all in keeping and in touch with the essence of the story. Red Sonja is often just a name mentioned in awe. We see her in action, then hear of her exploits from men who vainly chase her legend, some for revenge, others for profit, but all that happens here is because of a fruitless chase for the almost mythical, ferocious yet beautiful, fighting alpha-female Red Sonja. And that's how it should be. So look again to the beginning of this review. Look at the image of Red Sonja as she sits upon her throne. Look at Red Sonja. Look at Red Sonja. Read Full Review
Legends of Red Sonja #1 is a fantastic read thanks to the excellent synergy between the creative teams. Each page feels as if it had been a blast to create which in return makes it a blast for the readers. This is definitely one legendary comic. Read Full Review
This is a great series already and it has only been one issue! With Simone doing fantastic work with the ongoing Sonja title, this one is following right in its footsteps. Dynamite is proving why they are quickly becoming a publisher to be on the lookout for. Read Full Review
Although it lacks a view of the character herself, this collection of stories is more than enough to sell me on the series and make me to look forward to what the next group of artists and writers have in store. Worth a look. Read Full Review
Overall, this was a fairly solid issue, and is the start of the larger story. I expect the next few issues will be along the same lines and continue to build on Sonja. None of the stories here are from Sonja's own perspective which does well in creating a sense of mystery around the character. And that's something I enjoyed. Looking forward to next month's issue! Like all compiliations of short stories, some are better than others. I enjoyed two-thirds of this book, though I'm very interested to see what's to come. Read Full Review
Overall, this is an interesting look at an iconic character, and will hopefully give the reader a chance to explore the legend of Red Sonja from a variety of different perspectives as the series continues. For a character I hadn't read any of until very recently, I'm definitely finding myself more and more intrigued to find out more about her, and in that respect, this book is perfectly suited for me. Well worth a look. Read Full Review
I love the idea behind Legends of Red Sonja. Separately, each creator has an interesting idea and story, but just not enough time on execution. Read Full Review
Legends of Red Sonja #1 had a decent story as a standalone book, but the overwhelming inconsistencies throughout the issue became a bit much. To be fair there was a large number of contributing artists involved in this issue, but the overall sense by the end was one of ambivalence. Read Full Review
I did enjoy the effort put into the second creative team's vignette. It seemed like they were trying as hard as they could to tear it away from the ridiculous tale Simone set in motion. Although this is a noble cause it doesn't work; the vignette could be interesting on its own, but as a part of the overall arc, it doesn't work at all. The art does improve, however. Read Full Review
