SERIES PREMIERE! ALL-NEW series created by ROBERT KIRKMAN (THE WALKING DEAD, INVINCIBLE, OBLIVION SONG) and Chris Samnee (Daredevil)! Owen Johnson's journey to China to learn about his birth parents eventually leads him to a mysterious Shaolin Temple. The students there study to rediscover the Fire Power, the lost art of throwing fireballs. A power they claim will be needed soon to save the world. Will Owen Johnson be the first person in a thousand years to wield the FIRE POWER?
This book feels like a nostalgia trip; there are challenges for Owen to overcome, challenges of body, mind and spirit. Even though his journey may not be the most original one, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, told by two master creators, and look forward to volume two. Read Full Review
FirepowerVolume 1: "Prelude" unites two of the top creators in comics for an amazing tribute to classic martial arts films. It was a bold move for Kirkman and Samnee to release the first story as a graphic novel, but one that will no doubt pay off and get fellow readers to check out the ongoing series. Read Full Review

Overall, Fire Power, Vol. 1: Prelude provides an engaging story that comic fans of all types will enjoy as it sets the stage for Kirkman and Samnee's new series. And while the first issue releases concurrently with this graphic novel, it's well worth reading this book first, as it segues seamlessly into the story for Firepower #1 and provides all of the background readers will need to get the most of that first issue. At ten bucks, there is a pretty steep barrier to entry. And it's not the most original story on the shelf of your Friendly Neighborhood Comic Shop this month. But for that price you get more content than in a typical TPB, a self-contained story composed by a true modern master, and first-rate punching, kicking, and basketball-dunking (really) action. And if your library offers access to Hoopla, then there's really no reason not to give this a shot. Read Full Review
This prelude has fun characters, slick martial arts, and massive action set-pieces that are guaranteed to get you hyped up for the first issue. Read Full Review
The choice to publish such an ambitious introductory chapter first instead of revealing Owen's past through flashbacks (or a subsequently released tangential comic) is notable. Fire Power: Prelude is unconventional in its release strategy, unconventional even in its seemingly straightforward approach to storytelling. The punches thrown by Kirkman & Samnee have a familiar rhythm, but there's no way to defend yourself from all the talent that's clearly on display. Fire Power is peak artistic power that lands a roundhouse kick directly to the temple of myth itself. Read Full Review
Is Fire Power the greatest thing ever? Not yet, but it also doesn't seek to reinvent the wheel. For what it is, it's a lot of fun, and if you're looking for a new quarantine read that won't send you spiralling into an existential crisis, Fire Power is the one you want. Read Full Review
Man, that's so freaking good.
A very solid debut. It dragged a little bit during some of the scenes, especially with some of the dialogue between Lei Wun and Owen, but I loved the world building, the characters, and the story. I'm very interested to see where the story continues from here. And at $9.99 for around 154 pages worth of content, it's absolutely worth it.
