Scarlett #1, the latest G.I. Joe miniseries set within the shared Energon Universe, hits shelves this Wednesday! Writer Kelly Thompson brings her expertise in crafting badass female leads to the table (look no further than her current Birds of Prey and recent run on Captain Marvel), introducing Shana "Scarlett" O'Hara as a formidable protagonist with a compelling emotional hook.

The issue's plot and pacing are well-balanced, with a classic spy-style intro that would make James Bond swoon, intense action sequences, and important exposition that showcase Scarlett's relationships with several key players. The dialogue is engaging, although some of the back-and-forth argument between Scarlett & mission control during the opening scene felt redundant, but didn’t takeaway from the reading experience. Flashbacks highlighting her relationship with a character from her past are expertly written to provide character depth that pays off in the issue’s final few pages and sets up an interesting dynamic for what appears to be the miniseries' core plot.

Where the issue slightly underwhelmed, for me, was in the art. Marco Ferrari's linework is clean, but action sequences lacked the fluidity necessary to fully bring them to life. Both the Duke and Cobra Commander series had dynamic panels that made it feel like you were watching a movie. It wasn't until a double-page spread near the end of this issue that I felt like I was watching Scarlett in motion, rather than looking at nice snapshots of her mission. Outside of these scenes, Ferrari, colorist Lee Loughridge, & letterer Rus Wooton create a visual delight with great character designs & detailed scenery. Props to Loughridge's use of Scarlett's hair color as the main source of color during a scene in the white, snowy mountains.

While Scarlett #1 may not have been my favorite debut in the Energon Universe, it still offers plenty to get excited about and get me interested in what Scarlett has planned next. The Energon Universe has been very male-heavy so far, so it’s great to finally see some more gender diversity. With Thompson's expert writing and the art team's potential, I'm excited to see where this thriller takes us! more

In terms of the story, I wasn’t as gripped as I have been by other Energon Universe titles. That being said, Thompson does an excellent job establishing this character’s personality, and I’m excited to see this universe continue to grow.

I nervously give this a 7.5. I am choosing to interpret some of the scense more favourably. If this is some complex sister-relationship with Jinx, ok we can work with that. If that ninja scene wasnt her killing like 20 all at once but just an action scene of her taking out 2-4 with multiple motions, ok still cool. I can buy into the story.

What I hope this isnt is some over the top teleanovel romance with Jinx and Scarlett being so OP she can kill 20 people at once. Then we just dive into a totally un-grounded story that doesnt fit into this universe at all. This is a gritty universe with the humans being on the weaker side considering what other powers are out there. Scarlett better not be some super powered person.

So I am hopeful. Kelly has laid out enough point to turn this into a decent story. However she has also laid out enough points that she could tank this. I want to believe (because she wrote a half decent black widow story before) that she can write a strong female spy-solider lead. I think... more

This is a big downgrade from Cobra Commander and Duke series were. It wasn't horrible but I expected more and was hoping for more. The art style also seems to be somewhat of a downgrade but isn't bad either. The overall issue os just ok. The Destro preview in the back was more interesting than the main story. I'll probably wait until the complete volume is released to pick it up again.

This was the first comic in the Energon Universe that didn't excite me.
The art was ok, nothing really wrong with it, but it just wasn't hitting for me. It definitely felt like a step down from Duke and Cobra Commander.
The story was fine, decent spy plot and should have made for a great comic, but the dialogue fell flat in too many places. Some things were fine - I enjoyed the interaction between Shana and Stalker, for example. On the other hand, the bit where Shana takes out an army of ninjas, single handed landed like a fart in church. It was so cartoonishly over the top, I couldn't buy in. I remember thinking, "these are the worst ninjas ever". It reminded me of Jason Aaron's first issue of Punisher - which is not a positive association.Overall,I felt like I'd seen this before, and seen it done better.

In the end, I didn't care about this story, I wasn't invested in the character, and I won't be buying the next issue. Hopefully Destro is better. more
