Amazing Mary Jane (2019) #1

Dec 14, 2019

Heres the second problem I have with this book: WHY DOES IT EXIST? Nobody was clamoring for a Mary Jane book. The new Spider-man movie is still a couple of years away at most and while the comedy is great, the main idea of trying to get this movie made just doesnt seem that interesting. It doesnt justify spending 4 dollars over and over again. It may be good for others, but I simply read too much every week to give this my money.

The writings fine. The art is fine. If this was any other book itd be great even. The fact that this is the storyline that tells us why we once again MUST enjoy the status quo is what docks it. Marvel MUST figure out what they want to do. DO OR DO NOT. There is no middle ground. Not anymore.

Final Thoughts Normans back in green, and while Peter put up one heck of a fight, he lost in the end. With Spider-man now completely nuts, its up to the Walking Brain and a human, Dr. Connors to save the day. The heaviness of the main story is offset by the numerous heartwarming and funny stories that follow it. Grab this before its gone!

Everything is too on the nose. King is going for subtext, but its just too apparent. Batman (2016) #82

Nov 13, 2019

I have defended Tom King through 82 issues of Batman. Regardless of the wedding (which I just knew wasnt going to happen) and Dick losing his memory (not his decision) I stuck by him. I stuck by him after Alfred died, and I even defended his ridiculous reason Bruce hit Tim that we got last issue. But this finally broke the straw clean in half. This was a fight that built up for almost 4 years. Ever since the first issue where we saw Bane standing in the shadows of the rooftop watching Bruce save that plane full of people, this fight has been about the two of them. Bane deserved his comeuppance. We were denied that and that is infuriating.

The day is saved and everybody gets a happy ending. The characterization throughout these books is tremendous, with well thought out characters and a hell of a world that Jeff Lemire built. Cobra the organization is officially born. Cobra Commander and Destro have joined forces, and with more recruits, better B.A.T.S. and other technology at their fingertips, the world is in grave danger. Thankfully that grave danger gives us a solid comic book to read. While the art could pop more, the writing more than makes up for it. There is definitely a huge war brewing between Cobra, The Cybertronians, Cobra-La, and G.I. Joe. The only downside is that this was ONLY a 5-issue miniseries. Oh well! Onto Destro!

Superman finally gets up and puts his costume on. He flies to Washington to stop the super-villains that Wonder Woman has been valiantly trying to fight off and of course stops everyone in their tracks. As much as Batman scares people, Superman has the power to instill over-whelming terror into super villains. The issue ends as Dr. Manhattan and Superman stare at each other Which wasnt what I thought was going to happen. I really thought wed end the issue on Manhattans vision of Superman running at him.

Jan 28, 2020

This is the type of book that I love: a little serious, a little funny, and a whole lot of mutants. Excalibur is by far the best book of the "X" line after X-Men. The colors in the book are vivid (I really like Rictor's powers being represented by green energy.) The surprise ending of Peter Wisdom showing up is also nice. It's easy to forget that he's actually a mutant as well. The world of mutants is rapidly growing again.

Well that was abrupt. This book has been a crazy ride. This issue had some amazing moments (Magnetos return to the battle and team up with Polaris, Storms arrival and Scotts smile), but it must be said that everything got wrapped up REALLY quickly. We still need to see the end of ROTPOX so we dont have the full story, but one has to assume that Moira and her story will conclude in that final issue or maybe the upcoming Uncanny X-men 700. Heroes are back in business. No more of this killing indiscriminately stuff. There is no more doubt with these heroes. If youve been a reader that has been put off by all the death and gloom since Nimrod fell on the X-men during the 3rdHellfire Gala, then I implore you to read this.

I guess we can chalk that up to Reeds Watcher side being erased instead.Doom Its always nice to see Doom act a little scared or nervous. While he would never admit it, he was obviously nervous about dying in the center of a universal bomb. His statement that he knew Reed would live is also hilarious, simply because he DEFINITELY did not know that was going to happen. Flash (2016) #72

Jun 14, 2019

Back to my rant. The idea of each force getting their own little storyline is fine, but now that has been going on since issue 50 (if Im not mistaken.) Barry is simply not progressing (yes, I know its comics and even if he does progress, a reboot will kick in and hell start all over). For years Barry Allen was a shining example of making good choices and even when he made bad ones, he tried his best to fix them. All Barry keeps doing is pushing Iris and Wallace (new Wally) away, apologizing for it, and then doing it again. Add to the fact that now we are having a 5- issue flashback just slows the story down more. Now, I know Barry has to remember something important and that some guy in a cloak made him go on this little journey, but we need some closure to all of this and soon.

This was an equally annoying and exhilarating read. Optimuss fight with Skywarp was a lot of fun. Im happy they didnt kill him off (yet). He is, after all, my favorite Decepticon. I guess the running joke now is that since they killed Bumblebee and Cliffjumper has kind of taken his spot, Cliffjumper is just going to keep getting blasted around and will stand right back up like Wile E. Coyote? Its an interesting little joke, but I really hope they dont make this into a Kenny thing. Give that little guy a break! As I mentioned above, the issue is also annoying, simply because these damn humans keep interfering and keep trying to kill the wrong Cybertronian! Come on people! Hes trying to save your lives! Ultimate Black Panther (2024) #4

May 27, 2024

While far from perfect, this issue finally gives us a T'Challa that seemingly has a a purpose. The team has formed and the Cult of Moon Knight is making its move. Things are looking up.

Ultimate Black Panther (2024) #5

Jul 6, 2024

Final Thoughts Well that was a VERY QUICK READ. I think Im done with this book. Just when I thought that the book was finally turning a corner and ratcheting up the tension and story, we get an issue about a mysterious plant that is the opposite of vibranium? OK then! Look, Im sure some people are liking this story, but for an all-new universe that is supposed to have done things differently, this book feels like damn near every Black Panther book that Ive read since 2016 (with a few exceptions). I do hope the book will pick up and prove me wrong, but it seems stuck in first gear and there is no mechanic in sight. Save your money and get something else.

Ultimate Spider-Man (2024) #2

Final Thoughts If issue 1 was a prequel, this is Day 1. Peter is still getting used to his powers, hes already lost twice, and Spider-man still has no real identity. Thats bound to change in the upcoming issues. Wilson Fisk is set to take charge, the Goblin is just ramping up his attacks, and Jonah and Ben are very quickly becoming the heart of the book. I cant wait another month. Out of the two books in the line so far, this is the one to beat.

Ultimate Spider-Man (2024) #4

May 4, 2024

Outside of the cover, there is no sighting of Spider-man in this book. While a small bit of costumes or action would have been nice, this whole book is about building bridges that had been kept from being built for 20 years. An uneasy friendship has been forged, and while it doesn't seem its going to last (it cant), for right now Peter has some friends in high places. As for Uncle Ben, he and Jonah have a name finally for their business. Lets hope it finally gets off the ground in next issue. Pick this up every month. Dont be silly.

Ultimate Spider-Man (2024) #5

Jun 2, 2024

All that being said, this is a damn good-odd issue. We get some fantastic art, with callbacks to a world that might have been (The Ultimate Armor, Bullseye) and a story about a boy who must very quickly become a man. We meet some new old characters (Otto!), and we get more exploration of how Harry came to own Stark Enterprises. With a bit more Spider-Man, this would have been a 5. This is still the best of the Ultimate line.

Ultimate Spider-Man (2024) #6

Wilson Fisk has proven to be a fantastic villain and a worthy stand in for the Maker. Its obvious that in this reality, Wilson Fisk is going to end up being Peters arch nemesis, and now that he is also super-powered, Im excited to see how Peter and Harry rethink their strategy. This issue had heart, grit, and a surprising amount of bloody action, especially for a first meeting between our heroes and villains. This is still the book to beat on my pull every month, and you should (as always) grab it!

Ultimate Spider-Man (2024) #7

Aug 8, 2024

This issue has brought us some great action, more info on the world that we now inhabit and some cool suit information. But more than that, we have finally found a plausible reason for Harry Osborn to break bad. Having Norman Osborn in your head is NEVER a good thing. He may not have been crazy in this world, but its very apparent he wasnt the best dad. While this issue and the book in general could use more Ben, Jonah, & Gwen, it still earns a solid rating. Next issue is going to be a doozy.

Final Thoughts Another good issue, this book gives me hope for the Ultimate line. A great story is developing, Harry Osborn is slowly but surely coming apart, and our team of villains has come together. Peter is in a lot of danger, and he doesnt know it yet. Pick this up!

Ultimate Universe (2023) #1

Nov 2, 2023

This is not your parents Ultimate Universe. Literally AND figuratively. Between the final issue of Ultimate Invasion and this issues printing, weve learned that this Earth is not 1610 (the actual Ultimate Universe), but a new universe with the designation of Earth 6160. This new world is turning out to be a very fun and interesting one now that the Maker is gone (kind of). Im excited to see how destiny shapes things (and Im extremely excited to see a married Parker couple again in a few months, as well as Peach Momoko's X-men). The future is bright for this line.

Final Thoughts Well, we finally have our second mutant. With the introduction of Mei Storm, the world has gotten a whole lot bigger in just one issue. The incredibly strange reveal of the shadows origins opens up SO many questions. I guess Im in it for the long hall. Bring in even more mutants and look what happens! Its starting to feel like an X-men book. A very weird X-men book, but an X-men book regardless.

Jun 19, 2024

This issue finally provides us with our first superhero fight. While the outcome of said fight is a tad nebulous and we still have ZERO idea what or who this villain is, it does move the story forward. New characters have entered the fray and the ending promises to open new territory in a very unexpected way. This book is past its growing phase and is firing on most cylinders now. If only it wasnt so damn short.

Ultimate X-Men (2024) #5

Aug 1, 2024

With some big secrets and plot details finally revealed, this has turned into the most important (and best) issue yet. Our villain has a name, a new villain has been introduced, and Nico has discovered there is more to her powers than she originally thought. With the solicits showing that a very important X-Man will be showing up in the next issue or two, our team is just getting started. While the name drop of the team felt very awkward, at least we finally heard the name of the book IN the book.

Final Thoughts This is where I jump off. Its not that the idea of a baby Hulk is a bad one, its just that this book feels REALLY DEPRESSING. The whole world is screwed, and while Tony Stark wants to save it, I just dont think its going to end up the way he wants to. The designs of these characters are great, but this is supposed to be a book about how the world is saved, not how damn depressing it is.

Final Thoughts FINALLY! We finally have a book in the From The Ashes relaunch that has earned a 4. While the art does not do it in some bits, the book overall looks great, and unlike some of the other X-Books, this one seems to have a reason to exist. These are the mutants that are going to resurrect Xaviers dream. I may be a big Cyclops fan, but hes off fighting a war. These mutants are here to protect and nurture. Im excited for what comes next.

Valkyrie: Jane Foster #6

Dec 18, 2019

Janes characterization is still spot on. She chose to inherit these powers, but that doesnt mean she doesnt want a normal life as well. Shes been banished to the morgue, there is a horse living in her apartment, and life is only getting crazier. Im very happy to see that this book has made it past six issues and my hope is that it can make it past 12.

X-Force (2019) #2

Mar 31, 2020

This is a very interesting and tonally weird book. In this new era of mutants literally being superior over everybody else, the book shows the need for X-Force even more. Not every attack against the nation is going to be done on the political stage. There is always going to be a need for a secret task force to handle the dirty work.

Aug 8, 2024

Once again, the new age of X-Men has gotten off to a rocky start. All the books so far have landed around the 3 out of 5 range and this is no different. While the premise is good, and the coloring is amazing, there seems to be a lack of characterization (Tank in particular), and what seems to be a very unclear mission for the team. This book cant work if its going to be episodic. It needs a main villain (just PLEASE NO SINISTER.) Im a little less nervous about this book than the others though. There are some great designs and colors and there is still time to state the books actual objective. This book brings me hope in the From the Ashes era.

Some stuff really works and a lot needs to be worked on. Weird art choices, some great and not so great character development, and a very big BEAST of a problem leads to a very shaky first issue. For as much as I love the X-Men, I'll give issue 2 a cautious buy. Pick this up so you at least know what's going on and then make your decision.
