When the horror ends, the true terror begins. Williamsons fantastic writing establishes an uneasy alliance that spells disaster for any who cross their paths. The excellent imagery of Milana, Leoni and Wooten construct a sense of fear and danger as Evil enters its final form. This series is another monster win for a fast growing universe building a reputation for must read books every time out. Read Full Review

    Big Comic Page - Craig Neilson-Adams May 23, 2024

While I loved the inclusion of the Transformers in Skybound's Energon Universe, I'll admit to being a little skeptical coming in about just how much they could do to ‘freshen up' the worlds of G.I. Joe and Cobra, given how well-established they are. Turns out, I needn't have worried. Taking the familiar and tweaking it just enough to feel different and energized (no pun intended), Williamson and Milana – and indeed all of the Energon Universe creative teams to this point – have done an absolutely fantastic job with this new shared comic book universe, and I absolutely can't wait to see where it goes next in the pages of their upcoming Destro and Scarlett miniseries next month. Cobra Commander #5 ends the series with exciting teases of what's to come. Not just clashes between Cobra and G.I. JOE and Destro and Cobra Commander but also the future of the property's connection to the Transformers. It's an exciting time to be a fan of all of these properties. Cobra the organization is officially born. Cobra Commander and Destro have joined forces, and with more recruits, better B.A.T.S. and other technology at their fingertips, the world is in grave danger. Thankfully that grave danger gives us a solid comic book to read. While the art could pop more, the writing more than makes up for it. There is definitely a huge war brewing between Cobra, The Cybertronians, Cobra-La, and G.I. Joe. The only downside is that this was ONLY a 5-issue miniseries. Oh well! Onto Destro! Read Full Review

Comical Opinions - Gabriel Hernandez May 22, 2024

COBRA COMMANDER #5 elevates Cobra Commander as a Class-A villain and serves as an origin story for the formation of Cobra, heavily integrated with what's happening with the Transformers. For the most part, Williamson sticks the landing, albeit with an uncomfortable number of shortcuts to cross the finish line, and the artwork is perfectly serviceable. Read Full Review

The Transformers are still very much in the background of all of this, but I get the sense that Image Comics is biding its time in bringing them in rather than deliberately holding them off for a climactic crossover. Read Full Review

This issue follows the events of Duke as we flash forward to see the union of the two most dangerous men on Earth and the birth of the most deadly force since the Third Reich. Williamson really has given us a great start to the latest incarnation of G.I. Joe and is so far winning fans in a way IDW failed miserably at. Orders for these books are through the roof, trampling even Batman. And that's saying something.
Best of all, though he's going on hiatus for a bit, word is Williamson will be back writing a new regular G.I. Joe title. If you're not reading this yet, what's wrong with you? You're missing out on something good. This series proves there still are comics still actually worth getting today. Anyone looking for a good comic sh more

And so sums up the Cobra Commander intro... and boy was that an intro. He units the worst of them through fear and brutal pragmatism. I look forward to this Energon world. It first building blocks have been so amazing to see. Williamson clearly has fun writing these stories and I look forward to what else he has in store.

The finale of Joshua Williamson's Cobra Commander miniseries is a perfect conclusion that cements the character's transformation into the iconic villain we all know and love. Williamson delivered on his upfront promise, showcasing Cobra Commander's ascension to evil greatness with precision and flair.

Cobra’s coordinated attacks on M.A.R.S. Industries are expertly choreographed, with Williamson's writing and Andrea Milana's artwork working in perfect harmony. The visuals are stunning, with Annalisa Leoni's colors & Rus Wooton’s lettering bringing the action to life. But it's Williamson’s character development that truly shines, as Cobra Commander's new partnership with Destro reveal the depth of his ambition and cunning. more
