Contrasts and comparisons fill the pages of Ultimate X-Men #5, as Momoko reveals more information about the wider mutant universe and Hi-chans possible connection to the shadow being. By twisting these conversations into two interlinked yet visually distinct beats, Momoko lays the runway for establishing the Ultimate twist to mutant lore. This issue, and the series writ larger, makes a compelling case for remixing and reworking source material with a fresh voice/style. To create something truly new, a bit of honor and breaking expectations is needed in equal parts, and Momoko has both in spades. Read Full Review
Ultimate X-Men #5 edges ever closer to a good vs. evil storyline. As the mutants understand their powers, a larger threat looms, and only the X-Men can take it on. Pieces are coming into focus in this freshly weird and invigorating series. Read Full Review

With some big secrets and plot details finally revealed, this has turned into the most important (and best) issue yet. Our villain has a name, a new villain has been introduced, and Nico has discovered there is more to her powers than she originally thought. With the solicits showing that a very important X-Man will be showing up in the next issue or two, our team is just getting started. While the name drop of the team felt very awkward, at least we finally heard the name of the book IN the book. Read Full Review
Ultimate X-Men is rapidly approaching the formation of the actual X-Men as issue #5 introduces new mutants, their origin on Earth-6160, and the first mention of that all-important letter. It's the introduction of some of these elements near the issue's end that results in some of the only stilted narration and storytelling of the series to date, but it's dispatched with efficiency. Ultimate X-Men #5 picks up the pace, begins drawing the battlelines between the potential heroes and villains, and brings the title closer to something loosely resembling the X-Men. On the one hand, a higher pace and clear movement is a big step in the right direction for a title that's been treading water almost since issue #1. On the other hand, the leap from horror Manga to forming an X-Men team comes out of nowhere and feels both rushed and forced. Read Full Review
This continues to be a slow burn series, but this issue had a little more movement than most. The art goes without saying, it was beautiful. Some interesting developments and cool character moments. This was probably my favorite issue yet. I am a bit impatient for it to really kick into gear, but I don't want to take away from what it was: a great comic.
Beautiful issue, amazing work from peach momoko.
