INTO THE FORBIDDEN ZONE!
In a hostile world run by aggressive gorillas, scientists Cornelius and Zira are the only apes alive who see value in the mute, dumb human race - but even they know human capabilities have severe limits. So when their nephew Lucius goes missing, it is with great trepidation that they turn to a human ally, a young woman who will someday earn the moniker "Nova"... Steeped in a love for the classic tales, Marc Guggenheim and Álvaro L pez's series will take the Planet of the Apes legacy to explosive new heights - and it all starts here!
Rated T+
Beware the Planet of the Apes #1 is a terrific beginning to the miniseries, taking us back to the setting of the original film from 1968 (which I personally prefer over the modern CGI-infested Ape films). All the characters come to life through the writing and art and it really feels like another Apes film that never got released. I look forward to seeing what happens next in it. Highly recommended. A solid start to a series that is steeped in 'Apes' history but not at the expense of the narrative. Superbly written and expertly drawn, BEWARE THE PLANET OF THE APES fits into the franchise like a hand into a well worn glove. Read Full Review
Overall, Beware the Planet of the Apes #1 is a story that delves deeper into Planet of the Apes mythology. The story by Guggenheim is steeped in mystery and revisionist history. The art by the creative team is gorgeous. Altogether, a story that fans of the franchise will immediately jump on. Read Full Review
Even though established canon tells us everyone will be fine (for a while at least), the dangers our characters face still provide a great deal of suspense and intrigue, right up to that nail-biter of a cliffhanger. Likewise, the racial tension between the various ape species is on full-display and while its hard not to cringe when a favorite character expresses their prejudice against another, its oddly refreshing to see the heroes cast in shades of gray. However, there are a few strange narrative choices. The opening scene is essentially a reprint of Marvels older Apes series that was based on the film, retelling the events that lead to fateful meeting between time-displaced astronauts and horse-riding gorillas. While this is both fun and effective in establishing setting, the same device is used again twice, with both panels feeling totally out of place. Were the scene in question a flashback, it would make sense but here, its just jarring. Read Full Review
It's that clear love of what has come before that really sinks in and is clear in Beware the Planet of the Apes #1. It honors what has come before which will get fans excited while also laying a new chapter for those who might not be as familiar. It's a must for fans of Planet of the Apes. Read Full Review
Beware the Planet of the Apes #1 is a good, albeit slow start. It's neat to see how this builds on a previous comic story while integrating key characters from the original film. In many respects, this stands alone, building on the larger lore while naturally leading to the first film. Read Full Review
With amazing colors and illustrations,Beware the Planet of the Apesis off to an amazing start to prepare an audience to get into the lore for the new film coming out in May of 2024. Read Full Review
There's only so many pages in a single issue of an all-new series that can sink their teeth into a reader, so while the book relatively effectively sets the stage for the adventure that's about to unfold, we have yet to be given anything that confirms this is a series worth delivering to longtime fans. The story is just sort of rearranging the pieces of the original film, intercut with bits and pieces of Marvel's comic adaptation of it from back in '74, and even some interesting art doesn't entirely overcome that issue. Read Full Review
Plot
This comic tells how the intelligent apes Lucius, Zira and Cornelius meet Nova, the human who in the future helps astronaut Taylor understand where he was in time.
Remember that this story takes place two thousand years after 1972 (the year where the Planet of The Apes Movie was released) where an astronaut travels in time to a future where apes control the world in an era of barbarians.
The story takes place some time before, when Lucius and Zira visit the Forbidden Zone for the first time, which is actually the ruins of New York after two thousand years.
This comic is the perfect starting point to enter this universe and is also a delight for fans of the original film.

I'm not really sure how this fits into the canon. Taylor is shown crash-landing in the beginning but he doesn't show up for the rest of the issue. Nova doesn't meet Zira and Cornelius until they meet Taylor. I love the tie to the original movie/tv series. I'm not much of a fan of the new stuff. Let's see what Marc does with it.
