SECRET EMPIRE TIE-IN!
• With the incredible current events in NYC, Strange must ally himself with some unsavory people.
• No, Spider-Woman isn't unsavory, though the Doctor is allying with her.
• It's Wilson Fisk, a.k.a. the Kingpin. That's who we're talking about.
Rated T+
It is indeed very good, although the characterizations don't align with the rest of Marvel history. But they are internally consistent! You decide how to feel about that. Read Full Review
Taking over for an established creative team is tough enough, but doing so amidst an ongoing event certainly doesn't make things any easier. Read Full Review
Questionable ally Kingpin offers some "deal with the devil" help that even Dr. Strange is (eventually) hesitant to accept. This issue is beautifully drawn by Niko Henrichon and Dennis Hopeless's script packs in a ton of laughs. Maybe too many laughs and too much sass; that's where it falls short of true epic-ness. It's particularly hard to ignore the fact that Spider-Woman is completely superfluous here. Even Ben Urich plays a more important role in the plot; Jess is apparently just along to crack one-liners. They are amusing one-liners, at least!
Marvel books are usually burdened when they get sucked in by these events but this one has quite a bit of freedom to play under the setup and it takes advantage of that. I must admit, I'm enjoying it.
Almost said 8. This had interesting parts. Can’t wait to see what happens next.
While the addition of guests was welcome, the absence of any supporting cast made this feel less like the expected serial title it should be. I enjoyed the last artist, so while not bad, this art will take getting used to. And would it kill Marvel to make the story reveal the old witch's name like it would make a diff - or the name of the Dark Magic artifact wielded to give us a better forboding to guess at?
The book has issues with keeping character voices and characterization straight, but taken entirely on its own it's a dumb but fun enough book with nice art.
The dialogue is all wrong in this book. Kingpin, Mordo, and Captain America say things that are completely out of character. I liked the art though. Story is ok. 5/10
