Free Comic Book Day 2019 is the perfect chance to dive deep into the Marvel Universe with new stories and exciting adventures alongside some of Marvel's most acclaimed creators - and this year, Marvel is bringing you the biggest and boldest stories yet! FCBD AVENGERS #1 features a story by industry superstars Jason Aaron and Stefano Caselli that sets the stage of the main Avengers series just in time for Marvel's highly anticipated movie Avengers: Endgame, while an all-new thrilling 10-page tale from Gerry Duggan and Mike Deodato creates one of the most unique, dynamic, and deadly versions of the Avengers ever- the Savage Avengers!
Since this is free, I can say things like the art is worth the price of admission alone and the story really gives you a bang for your buck, but I could say that even if this was a regular priced issue. Both stories have me eager to get back to the regular issues of each book and while Gerry Duggans Savage Avengers story was my favorite, Jason Aaron had me laughing throughout the first one as well. It's safe to say Marvel Comics killed it on Free Comic Book Day this year. Both titles offer impressive cliffhangers and excellent stories to make even the most casual fan buy into what is to come. Read Full Review
Fans who are devoted to the Avengers property could find a lot to like here. The odd script in the first segment is as dull as the artwork in the second. Each half of the issue has a glaring flaw. Without being a reader of Aaron's ongoing Avengers title, it's difficult to grasp everything that's happened. It's not an ideal issue to come in on cold, but the last page of the Avengers half has me interested. I think the Savage Avengers half actually works better and tempts me more, but the team does not consist of characters I get excited for and I don't typically like Duggan's writing.
The Avengers story was alright. It teased a lot of what's to come, and while it all seems interesting, a lot of it is just more build up to add to the rest of the build up of the last 18 issues. And what was new, the cosmic Avengers team, confused me a lot more than it excited me. I was on board with Avengers before this, and I still am, but I'm not entirely sure how many new readers this would actually pull in.
The Savage Avengers story was pretty good. It felt less like a tease and more like something that was cut from issue one. It actually made the first issue make more sense. And revealed legitimate plot points that are necessary to anyone who wants to read this title. Again, I don't know that this will bring in new readers.
The first story was a bit weird, the second was okay.
