A Sorcerer Supreme is chosen! Be witness to a very important chapter in Avengers history and the lore of Marvel magic! Plus, the Avengers finally have a big showdown with the Hood and not everyone walks away from it unharmed! Rated A …$3.99
It's a good wrap-up and a bit of a reset for the mystical side of the Marvel universe, and it'll be interesting to see where it goes from here. Read Full Review
But in the end, Bendis does a fine job of establishing Doctor Voodoo as a hero to watch. More surprisingly, this issue actually holds real ramifications for future Dark Reign storylines. I was surprised at the state Bendis left the Hood in at issue's end, and it should be interesting to see where the character heads next. Bendis also sets up a thread that will lead into Dark Reign: The List and rather blatantly hints at what could be Marvel's next big push after Dark Reign. New Avengers #54 is a disappointment if you want real Avengers action, but as a gauge of what is to come for Marvel in the coming months it's not bad at all. Read Full Review
A decent book with an interesting set of characters, but unfortunately the Avengers themselves play second fiddle. An interesting ending can't change the fact that this arc's purpose was to sell a new series. Read Full Review
Im sure that Tans work looks decent when only pencilled. Here, it looked stronger than in previous issues. The problem, as one can see from the cover of this comic book is that the colourist overpowers the artwork with the flashy colours. She submerges all the art and thus its hard to get a quick representation of whats going on when looking at the art. A cover staging the Avengers fighting a gigantic villain is a classic clearly taken from Brave and the Bold #28 which introduced the Justice League and Fantastic Four #1. But when looking at those other comic books, its much easier to understand whats going on. Here, we have an overabundance of reds, yellows and oranges engulfing characters that already where bright coloured costumes, like Wolverine, Spider-Woman and Spider-man. Well, the interior of the comic book is the same and no iconic element can step out of the page because of the submerging effects of the colouring. Read Full Review
New Avengers #54 was an average at best issue. At $4.00 a pop, New Avengers remains a poor value. The reader gets a shallow story that is not worth the cover price. I would only recommend New Avengers #54 to die-hard Bendis fans and to Brother Voodoo fans. Read Full Review
I still don't get/like the fact that Brother Voodoo is the new Sorcerer Supreme, but I think I made my feelings on that subject very well known during my review of New Avengers #53, so I'm not going to get into that again. This was a mediocre comic that I doubt I'll even remember come tomorrow morning. Read Full Review
