Walter Simonson's Thor run is widely considered to be not only some of the best Thor comics of all time, but simply some of the best comics, period. Now the legend returns for a special tale about Thor and Beta Ray Bill - with art from Mike Hawthorne and beloved veteran Sal Buscema! And the trio is joined by yet another unforgettable Thor team: Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz, who will be telling an all-new Thunderstrike story! Thor: The Worthy #1 is an interestingly-timed issue when you consider everything that has happened and will be happening in Thor's plot arc. Seeing all the different Thor mantles and characters in one issue like this was fun, and might even leave people wondering what will be next for Thor. Read Full Review
While elements of this might not be incredibly accessible for casual readers, it still proves to be an enjoyable and rather retro read. Read Full Review
The last story, Rule of Reflection, reunites writer Kathryn Immonen with Lady Sif, the character she wrote in an acclaimed run of Journey into Mystery earlier this decade. This one is set during the Jane Foster era of Thor and sees them teaming up, which is a fun dynamic we didnt get nearly enough of while Jane was in Thor mode. Rule of Reflection might be my favorite of the three, if only because Im a bigger fan of Sif and Jane than I am of Bill or Thunderstrike. Immonen proves here why she may be one of the more underrated comic writers of her generation, while Tom Reillys art is appealing cartoony with colors by Chris OHalloran that match the playful vibe of Immonens script. So, this Thor the Worthy One Shot, wasn't exactly what I was hoping far but it still had some good elements regardless; and eerily felt like there were some characters it was trying to remind us of certain characters. Read Full Review
Veteran creators assemble to tell untold tales of other hammer-wielders besides the Odinson. The art is uniformly solid, the stories are all plotted well, and each strip has a very strong nostalgic feel for the era it represents. (80s, 90s, and early 2010s). This isn't essential reading for anyone other than Thor completionists, but it's a satisfying ride.
This issue isn't too bad. The Walt Simonson story with Beta Ray Bill felt nostalgic. The Thunderstrike story felt like Thunderstrike... which isn't great. And the Sif/Jane Foster Thor story was kinda boring and stilted. I guess it is cool to have an anthology of stories about the *other* Thors but I just wasn't feeling these stories.
