KANO's art is stunning, gripping and moving. Dysart's writing is compelling, intriguing and complex. This single issue gives so much with so little, like other Book of Death one-shots. Yet, this certainly does it best. The art is amazing, showing the complexes and colors of the universe. There was a lot of great moments in this issue that felt fulfilling: particular the fate of Zephyr aka Faith… and finding out which Valiant character she ended up married to. The story is self contained while builds upon both Harbinger and Imperium. Definitely, one of the best single issues I have ever read. Read Full Review

Book of Death: Fall of Harbinger #1is an enlightening issue that details its end in an exciting manner consistent with the characters. It's good seeing what becomes of Harada's Foundation Zone and the eventual impact on the Earth as well as the impact of other characters on this future. The mystery behind Harada's return is intriguing, and the answers are well worth the wait and leave a lasting impression. The current Imperium series is one of my favorites and I'm glad this issue captured the essence of what makes it so great. Read Full Review

If you want fun, continuity rewarding superhero stories, Valiant is the place to be. With an incredibly fun and effective one shot, this is an issue to check out. Book of Death: The Fall of Harbinger #1 is a heavily character-driven book that looks at both Peter Stanchek and Toyo Harada. However, the beauty of Dysart's writing allows him to incorporate larger concepts such as death and rebirth and multiple dimensions as well. Kano provides solid artwork from the layouts to the world design to the action sequence that brings out the conflict in Stanchek's mind as well as the actual physical threat of the Harada Mind. If you're not reading Imperium or you didn't read Harbinger, then you're probably thinking, "I should skip this issue." Well here's the strange thing. Dysart actually treats this issue as more of a recap to everything he's done with the franchise from day one. He still manages to craft a rewarding story, but he also gives new readers the Cliffsnotes of everything they've missed. If you've been curious about this franchise, don't be afraid of this issue. Book of Death: Fall of Harbinger #1is the lone shining star in an otherwise weak summer event. Although Kano's standard humans look a little wonky, his surreal scenes of mind and monster are so gorgeous that they more than make up for it. Story-wise, Dysart's written a thoughtful script here that feels like a respectful and tender funeral for the entire Harbinger concept. Despite its inherent flaws, Book of Death: The Fall of Harbinger is a solid tie-in to Valiant's big event. The wonderful art by Kano is a big reason this issue works better than expected, but also the structure of these one-shots plays to Dysart's strengths as a writer. The Fall of Harbinger may still prove challenging for those unfamiliar with Stanchek and his allies, but those willing to dig into the details will be rewarded with a layered and powerful narrative. Book of Death: Fall of the Harbinger is yet another amazing one-shot look at the final days of a Valiant character, as although these tales haven't focused heavily on the event they tie into, they're nevertheless an inviting read.
