If you're going to start reading X-O Manowar, #25 would be the way to begin. You get a great look into X-O Manowar in and out of the armor and even learn about Armor Hunters in the process. Venditti managed to create a compelling story and introduce the next big event all at the same time. Dare I forget, the backups are amazing, I loved Andy Runton's Owly story, and Justin Jordan and Rafer Roberts one page comic was a hoot; you will all have a blast with these. Robert Venditti should be sitting somewhere, alone if need be patting himself on the back. It takes time, patience, originality, imagination and a splash of crazy to create and carry an incredible character like X-O Manowar for this long, especially in such an incredibly competitive industry. X-O Manowar #25 was fun,informative and prepared you for what was to come. Absolute electrifying art allowed the reader to jump into Venditti's world and be apart of his creation. While slightly more verbose than a Prince Valiant strip, the J. G. Jones' one-pager is a nice way to kick off a tribute to X-O Manowar while the cover gallery caps off what has led to this point. This is how anniversary issues should be done: recognize the history, celebrate that veteran readership and experienced creators, bring newer readers up to speed and seed the future. "X-O Manowar" #25 executes this brilliantly, giving readers a magnificently robust comic book filled with twenty-seven pages of new story in addition to the pin-ups, data file information and pitch documentation. Overall, the "Anniversary Spectacular" promised for X-O Manowar #25 is a hodgepodge of stories and bonus material that examines the various facets of X-O Manowar. There is a little bit of everything to please fans, whether it be an Armor Hunters lead-in, beautiful artwork, a set of humorous stories, or some bonus reading material that gives insight into the story creation. The re-launch of Valiant comics in 2012 with X-O Manowar is what reignited my passion of comics. As an old school Valiant fan, I remember the quality storytelling that Valiant brought to the table. This new incarnation continues that tradition. Though I enjoyed most of what was presented in this issue, I wish that it had more of the substance I have grown accustomed to and less of the fluff. Because there's so little prelude story and so much filler it's hard to recommend this book. In large part it feels like a book to fill a month so they can have more time fleshing out and finishing the big story that's coming. Overall it's skippable because it adds nothing to the story. There are some nice goodies, but not much about this Anniversary issue feels essential, and some pieces are just tossed in the mix for the heck of it. It functions okay as a jump-on point, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it for that because all of that text explaining the story's history might scare new readers away.
