One of the best stories to come out of the Big 2 in years. It's smart, heavy, and doesn't hold the reader's hand, instead letting them project their own interpretations and ideals onto the characters.
Love this
Tom King delivers an amazing story filled with twists, turns and moral quandaries. What more could you ask for? This book centers around a band of characters I didn't know or care about (even Kyle Rayner). By the end I cared. Kyle has one of the most badass moments in comics. Seriously if you want a well written story with oodles of symbolism and inner turmoil go out and buy this.
The covers. The emotional depth. The character development. Only having a one-issue break in the art with a one-shot guest pencil-er prevented this from being a perfect rating. I read this after The Vision, so the standard for emotional resonance is probably too high, but it's an amazing book, even though I didn't know much about Rayner beforehand. Must-read.
Great mix of political thriller, team up story and social commentary.
I picked up The Omega Men: The End is Here after a recommendation from a friend after expressing my liking of Tom King's new Batman run. I didn't really know what i was getting into when i picked up the TPB, other than the author and the fact that Kyle Rayner played some sort of role. What i definitely didn't expect was the amount of social, political and religious commentary involved, masterfully woven through an action packed story with lovable characters. I found myself loving the characters more and more as i read on, especially Broot, Scrapps and Doc. While the political statements get a little heavy-handed towards the end, it didn't hinder my enjoyment of the book whatsoever. Would highly recommend the book to anyone looking for something with a little depth. Also worthy of note was the fact that the book really isn't Kyle Rayner and the Omega Men, as it may seem judging by the cover and his status within the DC universe - he takes a back seat for the start and comes into the story just enough to not outshine any of the others. Overall, a great read, pick it up soon!
So I enjoy most of Tom King's Black Label stuff (Mister Miracle, Strange Adventures, Human Target, Super Girl) and I'm reading Rorscharch now...however, I kinda' had to struggle through this one. Even though I am also a fan of Kyle, I just had a hard time getting into the characters and really behind their struggle. In regards to giant space epics, I prefer King's deconstructing character works. The art by Bagenda was complimentary.
Omega Men enjoys pretty good reviews (8.5 on Comic Book Round Up, 4.4 on Amazon, and a 4.06 on Goodreads) but it isn't something I'd like pick back up off my bookcase.
"What good is a story you only want to read once?" - Bill Willingham
Solid King writing, but I couldn't get into the story as much as his other material.
