DC has had major issues with Supergirl. In efforts to reinvent the character over and over they have given her so many personalities that she has no personality of her own. Is Supergirl a temperamental misfit that punches everything, is she a girl that heads down to seedy bar to drink when things get overwhelming, starts barfights and tells kids to sod off, is she a drugaddled suicidal kid, is she someone who would sacrifice earth for the glory of a Kryptonian society etc etc.

It has all been built on the well accepted lie that original Supergirl was Superman wearing a skirt, and DC must give her a new pigeon hole. But that's not what they are doing, they are shoving her into pigeon holes that are already filled with better suited characters. If I want true grit, I'll read true grit. If I want a badass sword slinger with attitude I'll read Red Sonja. If I want to read an evil character wearing black fetish gear, I'm sure there are places for that too. You come to Supergirl to read Supergirl.

The problem with Supergirl isn't that she is Superman in a skirt. Noone ever said "Phoebe" is just "Joey" in a skirt because they share the same species and have parts of their characters overlap. Everyone who has read Supergirl knows that her books read differently because of her experiences. The problem with Supergirl was that she was encroaching on the big man's space and making him less special. It's why they killed her, and it's still built into our society today. Whenever a woman takes a position seen as belonging to a man whether it's a new computer game or a top hire, it's "woke" or "dei".

Supergirl was always fine as her own character.

In the first issue Sophie cleans the board and brings back Silver-age Kara. It is just as good as it ever was. Sure, the stuff that happened before has still happened, that's the curse of comics isn't it, but she dips into the history that makes sense for the character and ignores the rest, leaving us with a wholesome coherent character that is a joy to read.

I don't know if Supergirl was the first character of her choice to write, but whether or not it was, she left all baggage at the door and decided to write Supergirl. She didn't bring some other story she had been carrying in her head for some other character and plastered Supergirl on top. This reads like Supergirl from the first to the last page in every frame. Sophie has done the research making the issue a veritable feast for long time fans of the character, and giving new readers hooks to go back and research.

Sure this could still take a turn, we are just one issue in, and towards the end Supergirl might be boozing and bar fighting again, but judging this issue by itself, I couldn't have imagined a better starting position for her new take.

I found the art and colors very beautiful. The plot structure is very similar to the Silver Age. I liked the characterization too. I liked it overall.

The finale of this series is nearly unreadable. The narration is still overwhelming and a distraction from any story Tom King might be trying to tell. The fight sequences attempt to glorify the violence which makes it all the more gratuitous. It’s not enjoyable, it’s not engaging on any level. It’s a real shame King isn’t capable of utilizing the existing history between Shiva and Black Canary. There’s A LOT there that was explored by Gail Simone in Birds of Prey 20 or so years ago. Those stories are far better than this in every way. EVERY WAY. This series just comes off as an admission that King doesn’t really understand the subtlety and nuance of Dinah’s character, as if losing a fight with ZERO STAKES and surrendering would be difficult for her to do if it meant saving someone’s life. Maybe training enough to last long enough to surrender is a story…, but not having difficulty in surrendering. King has successfully made both Canaries appear petty and superficial. And, still we don’t know why this fight even exists…. And, we still don’t know why Dinah is willing to turn to Vandal Savage’s methods to save her mom from cancer. This series doesn’t even deliver on THAT central motivation. What an awful ending to a poorly conceived series, and what a lackluster attempt to write Black Canary. Others have done it better. Heck, even Kelly Thompson’s attempts in the current Birds of Prey are better than this. more

Power Girl is an incredible character and I've loved her since All-Star Comics #63.
I loved her in Showcase. I loved her in Infinity Inc. I loved her in Crisis, Warlord, Justice League Europe, Justice Society, Infinite Crisis, JSA Classified, and of course Power Girl v1 & v2.

And then there's v3 by Leah Williams and... it was truly horrible.

The covers were great, but "Paige" was a complete mistake (and that it was cancelled is testament to that). more

Horrible title with Atrocious writing. Don’t ever let Leah Williams writer anything involving Power Girl again DC! Good riddance.

This comic has the same pacing of reheating food in the microwave. Moving slow and repetitive. The kids are fine. Kitty talks to her girlfriend and goes to work. There is no Emma and Bobby this issue. The stuff with Sinister should’ve got the ball rolling this issue, but once again nothing exciting with that happens until to the final

Does Jeff Lemire even want to write the JSA? This series is so soulless and rushed. There is no sense of passion or coherent story structure present. The decision to start the story in the middle of nowhere and show the team at their worst is extremely odd. I expected better from Lemire.

Nicole Maines is doing the damn thing with this title!

I applaud Eve Ewing for not shying away from addressing Kitty‘s recent past, however, it’s just not possible to justify the murders she has committed during the Fall of X storyline. Kitty, one of my favorite X-Men ever, is a ruined character, and it isn’t Ewing’s fault. However, the issue of Kitty’s mass murder is brushed aside pretty easily, and this is a problem.

The art is great as usual,and the writing feels natural, but I feel this series is written for a younger generation with different sensibilities. Gen X guys like me just don’t give a shit about those teenager’s issues. So the question is, who is reading this title? The younger people that the series caters to or people like me, who just want a great superhero book, but are getting a lot of slice of life and social justice crap instead? more

I am a huge fan of Power Girl. To me, she's one of the most underutilized characters in the Super-Family (sadly overshadowed by Supergirl). She’s a more mature and assertive version of Supergirl, who also doesn’t take herself too seriously. The series by Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner is a real delight and deserves more recognition. This series, however, is written by an author who doesn’t know Power Girl, doesn’t like her defining traits, and has no interest in writing about Power Girl. So, they create their own character, who just carries the name for clout. It's the kind of mediocre series published without anyone really knowing why. (And besides me, for morbid curiosity, people really read it ?) more
