Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #7 was a step up for how unconventional the Rangers can be when pushing forward requires all the grit they can muster. Fast paced, and straight to the point of mounting some sort of offense against Rita. The further Mighty Morphin Power Rangers gets from its source material, the better the book continues to get. It's not that Kyle Higgins is braving entirely new territory - one has only to look to the MMPR feature film to see the Rangers de-powered and Zordon de-tubed - but rather, it's the changing tone that proves the draw. Ultimately, I really enjoyed this issue. It presented a perspective that we rarely see, that of Billy being taken away from the team and the effect that that has at a time when he is needed most. It also showed the Rangers acting outside of their element, having to formulate plans and try their best to figure things out without the crutch of their powers and Zords. Rather than simply relying on the old system of presenting the Rangers with a monster that is too powerful for them to beat until the end of the episode, as was common for the show, they are instead presented with a monster that, while powerful, is much more dangerous because of his knowledge of the Morphin grid and his ability to strip that from them, presenting them with new challenges that I look forward to seeing them struggle to overcome. With cool actions scenes, a dark, somewhat depressing tone, Mighty Morphing Power Rangers continues to be a startling, modern remaining of Power Rangers. The story moves at a fast pace and not pages feel wasted or to stretch out the story. It doesn't stray to far from what you might remember as the Rangers try to remain a beacon of light, more for their own sakethan anyone else, and still have moral lessons that they have to learn.
