Barbara Gordon Breakout #2 leans into a horror vibe with this issue and lets the artwork do more of the showing rather than telling. There is a ton of mystery being built up in this issue, and we see Barbara in a very vulnerable state for the first time in a long time. If you weren’t sold before, I think this second issue cements this run into my monthly pulls. Read Full Review

    Geek Dad - Ray Goldfield

This is a solid mystery, with some surreal horror elements starting to make their way into the narrative. I do worry that the pace is pretty deliberate so far, and I’m not sure this prison suspense story can go the long haul without becoming monotonous, but so far it’s done a good job of escalating the tension with each issue and showing us how Barbara operates when she’s cut off from her technology and seat of power. As Gotham City falls further and further into the grasp of Vandal Savage, one of the Bat family is left to tackle a seemingly impossible task in ‘Barbara Gordon: Breakout’ #2. This creative team is firing on all cylinders to provide solid mystery, engaging character moments, and a deep spotlight for one of the best characters. Read Full Review

Barbara Gordon heads into survival mode as the dangers inside Supermax become too much to handle. Tamaki throws more gas on the burning drama. Nahuelpan & Bonvillain lean heavily into Barbara’s past traumas. Where this is all heading is very much up in the air. Read Full Review

This series has a lot of potential, with a compelling mystery and a very solidly written Barbara Gordon. I hope the mystery continues to unfold satisfyingly and Barbara is able to take back her agency in coming issues. Read Full Review

The severe injuries that cause her to be haunted by her past is a big reminder of this for Barbara. Mariko Tamaki and Amancay Nahuelpan drive that home with how they lean into horror vibes. At the same time, we see various examples of how much long-term planning has gone into this story so we can expect even more compelling storytelling. Read Full Review

Don’t Fear the Reaper Barbara Gordon: Breakout #2 is a case of tonal whiplash, going from the first issue’s prison setting to something more psychedelic and horror-tinged. The story does too good a job keeping us off-balance along with Barbara, and becomes too hard to follow. The saving grace is the artwork and colors, which conveys the confusion and horror of what our heroine is facing. Hopefully future issues will find a bit more of balance between atmosphere and clarity. Read Full Review

Tending to think this might be a run that reads better when collected. Like this individual issue certainly didn't do more on its own other than maybe build some suspense. But I feel like even the 1st issue was lukewarm in terms of narrative. I'm still interested because I love the character and I still have faith in Tamaki but she needs to add some meat to her story soon. The art does carry more weight here because the narrative is too light on substance. It's good, fits with the vibe of the story but ain't knocking anyone's socks off.

Huh. Pretty weird issue here. I liked it, but I felt the execution of it all was rather strange. This felt short and long at the same time. It's a fairly quick read, but I also feel that this could have been condensed a bit. Like, I don't know that we needed all of the visions we got, for instance. The whole thing almost feels like filler, which is odd. I don't know. Nahuelpan's art was nice, though, I will say.

I don't think Mariko knows how injuries work and the time needed to treat them. Also the drawing of the bone was not a fracture so medically none of this worked. It's hard to give this a review since nothing really happens or is fleshed out. Barbara wakes up in the infirmary and hallucinations happen all issue. Thats it. the art Is well done but this issue was just a big nothing burger.
