No one can make actions scenes like Miller and Mazzucchelli, holy shit. Miller at his prime was such a master of writing the characters thoughts, Batman and Gordon thought's are perfect, if we hadn't any dialog between characters we would still know what was going on, that's how good Miller and Mazzucchelli are. Batman is surrounded, is hurt, lost most of his gadgets, has few escape possibilities, and still he manages to find a way of evening the odds in a manner that feels authentic and not a coincidence. Also, when he calls the bats.....come on man, it's just so badass.
I have read this arc i don't know how many times already and it just gets better. I remember that one the things i love about The Long Halloween is how Loeb an more
“The hunk of metal in my hands is heavier than ever…”
Thrilling. An issue full of action that manages to strike a perfect balance between action and character development. Not only this is one of the best Batman stories, it’s also one of the best Gordon stories.
Mazzucchelli's art is pure class. He has a classic style which fits perfectly to the tone of the story.
An other classic scene here, where Gotham's Squad chases Batman and then the bats came to the rescue!
Also, Catwoman's 1st "official" appearance :-)
But, Jim Gordon remains the true protagonist of the story. His thoughts about his colleagues, Batman and how things are getting done in Gotham are in the spotlight.Miller doesn't forget to keep his characters humane and that's exaclty what he is doing with Gordon here adding regret, doubts and personal troubles.
