DC / Hanna-Barbera: Superman/Top Cat #1

I generally love these Hanna Barbera crossovers, some more than others. Superman/Top Cat is one of these better ones. Not only does it strike a nostalgic chord for me, but it's a fun, entertaining story " plus I'm an unrepentant cat person. I hope that we will see Top Cat return the next time there is a DC/Hanna Barbera crossover event. Read Full Review

This crossover is funny and sharp, but the fact that it just seems like two unfitting characters mushed together makes it not as funny as it perhaps could have been. Regardless, it's a Hanna-Barbera Crossover so it's not going to be judged too harshly, and is a fine entry into this series of one shot issues. Read Full Review

DiDio had one of the better pairings in the Hanna-Barbera " DC crossovers. Top Cat is conning everyone he can, per usual, and is paired with pretty much his opposite. With a Top Cat removed from his familiar trappings, there was the real danger of this story getting bogged down in the nonsense of one sort or another. This comic largely sidesteps that, however, and instead gives us an enjoyable tale that affectionately riffs on classic horror tropes while delivering superhero action laced with just the right amount of social commentary and sly humor. Top Cat is another Hanna Barbera character that I have no experience with. He's also another character in this series of One-Shots that I found to be instantly endearing and would like to see more of.  The story is wonderfully absurd to the point of parody and I think that's the point. People are mysteriously dying after consuming Kale. The story reveals that Kale may appear to be a green veggie, but it's really a sentient alien race that is being exploited as a superfood. (Extremely dark huh?) Superman and Top Cat team up to battle the last of the Kale species and wind up having to deal with an even more insidious situation.  Top Cat is the most fun of the Hanna Barbera characters in this series of One-Shots. He manages to completely upstage Superman. This also highlights my one real gripe with the issue, Superman portion of the comic is pretty weak by comparison. Its the opposite of the Green Lantern/Huckleberry Hound crossover I reviewed a couple days ago.   There's a hilarious scene in the issue where Superman asks Top Cat visit Clark Kent. Cat immediately sees through the disguise. Which causes him to question the intelligence of Clark's co-workers. The comic is wonderfully self-aware. We get another great Penciler/Colorist combo in this issue. The close-up to Kalien, the Kale monster is beautifully detailed and even when some of the pencils aren't as detailed, the colors still make the panel pop.
