This is very much a transitional chapter for the series, as writer Tom Waltz touches on a number of characters and running plot threads without really fixating on any one element. Needless to say, some of the scenes in this issue are more compelling than others. Read Full Review
In summary then, while this is essentially a transitional issue between larger storylines, the sheer consistency of IDWs TMNT title remains unparalleled, particularly in the often shaky world of licensed comics. Even in these down issues there are still so many great moments, and with the seeds being planted for what could prove to be some significant changes in the issues to come, my dedication to this series remains absolute for the foreseeable future. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #55 was a solid one-shot tale, as despite the narrative itself being substandard, we'd be given some marvelous character development. The creative team would also lay some seeds for future developments, with the heartwarming final moments being sensational to say the least. So in other words, buy this comic. Read Full Review
The issue also spends several pages on April and Casey‘s relationship hitting the inevitable brick wall given his stubbornness and her desires for more out of their lives. Personally, I could have done with far less of this plotline and more of Alopex who we see both helping Angel with the Street Phantoms and getting her mind played with by Kitsune. Given the later I'm growing increasingly afraid of Alopex being boxed into the role of a tragic figure. As my favorite of all of the new characters created for this series (or the recent cartoon) I'm holding out hope that Eastman and Waltz have more in store for the fox than an unfortunate end. And then you have Mikey's 'revelation,' which is really just a poor excuse to get him back into place that was stupid for him to abandon anyway. The issue's only redeeming qualities (besides the art) are Alopex's fight scene and the Leatherhead preview at the end. Hopefully the next one will put this normally stellar series back on track. I agree with fellow reviewers that this was wayyyy to wordy for what happened. I liked all of it dont get me wrong but i found myself less interested in reading the pages as it went on. I knew what was being said and I didnt need 200 word bubbles to get the point. The story plot is great just needs to cut out the fat a little better...Mikey Scenes were great and touching especially if you have been reading since issue 1.
TMNT has always focus on the push and pull of character relationships. The lovers quarrel between Casey and April is not as compelling for some reason, but seeing Mikey come back and fix up the lair somehow leads to a much more engaging emotional moment.
there was some very good points in this issue, Michelangelo's memories of his family were bittersweet and moving. there was a fantastic fight scene between a mentally preoccupied Alopex vs. the Street Phantoms.
and it was great to see Alopex able to resist Kitsune's mind control. it showed real strength in her character.
but there were also a lot of painful pages of exposition dumping! especially in the scenes between April and Casey. the final few panels with the couple were emotionally driven, but went on WAY too long! i just wish we could have gotten there sooner! their lover's spat didn't need to eat up as many pages as it did!
it was a real chore to get through! sure we've all been there before, but do we need that more
