The art of Exceptional X-Men #4 is, for lack of a better word, exceptional. One scene I think showcases the artist's talents is when Bronze has to use her powers at school. The contrasting of bright colors gives so much depth to the scene, and really highlights Bronze's powers. The art made the already exciting story pack and even bigger punch by bringing Kate's grievances to life, especially when we get a very impactful flashback. Read Full Review
Exceptional X-Men #4 continues to excel at capturing the emotional and thematic core of the X-Men mythos, focusing on Bronze's relatable struggles while weaving in the complexities of team dynamics and post-Krakoa tensions. Eve L. Ewing and Carmen Carnero craft a character-driven narrative that balances introspection with brief, impactful action. While some supporting characters take a backseat, the issue thrives on its heartfelt storytelling and vibrant artwork, making it a standout in the "From the Ashes" era. Read Full Review
Exceptional X-Men #4 proves to be a strong character moment for Kitty Pryde and really solidifies her relationship with the rest of the X-Men, while also allowing a newer character some time in the spotlight. Read Full Review
I love that Ewing takes this seriously and has Kitty call out Iceman in a powerful sequence that demonstrates how deadly she is. But this is still the fun, more slice of life X-Men title with memorable moments like the kids trying to figure out a musical theatre actress to compare Bronze to, or Iceman awkwardly talking about his past dating life with Kitty. Another enjoyable issue. Some of the dialogue and pacing wasn't my favorite, but I can't deny that this is a nicely put together story overall. I really liked the fake-out with Bobby as well, and I think Ewing has done an especially nice job writing Kate throughout the run thus far.
This was probably the first issue in this series that resembled an actual X-Men comic. Plus: Bronze is still a horrible whiny character, but I caught myself rooting for her in this episode of Gleeā¦ sorry, issue of Exceptional X-Men.
One failed training match with no actual instructions or training given and one random creature "battle" to show Bronze can come through when she needs to....ehh. Still more high school CW drama book than X book but this issue moved, ever so slowly, in the right direction....I guess. Of course they flub the names of two students in the intro page but to be fair does anyone even care? Editors?
