At least they've toned it down a bit but we'll keep getting some of this in some X titles (less in the rest of the universe but still some) as they were seen/claimed as the flagship books for this new gen style during Krakoa. I don't think the fans they are looking for really have the extra income to buy these books and Gen X like us, who have the funds, are luke warm at best to this crap. It mainly gets read for free.
Exceptional X-Men #5
| Writer | Eve Ewing |
| Artist | Carmen Carnero |
| Cover Price | $3.99 |
Saying the past is the past doesn't make it so, and Kitty is carrying the weight of her choices. Violence, vengeance and her life as Shadowkat are not so easily left behind - especially now that the rest of her team of new recruits knows the ugly reality of what she did in the shadow of Krakoa's fall. Now that the truth is out, so is Melee, leaving the EXCEPTIONAL X-MEN on the rocks.

Jan 19, 2025Exceptional X-Men continues to not be a superhero beat 'em book, but digs into the lived experience of being a marginalized person with a side of superpowers. I love Thao's phasing and invisibility abilities match her ability, and Carnero draws them in a clear way. Read Full Review

Jan 15, 2025I'm really enjoying Exceptional X-Men as we're seeing so much growth in Kitty as she mentors these young mutants. Also, I'll never get enough Emma Frost and Ice Man! Read Full Review

Jan 16, 2025Ewing and Carnero keep giving us some of the best work in the X-line since the beginning of the From the Ashes. While not groundbreaking, its enjoyable and Im loving the new characters with each new issue. The book has given me a very nostalgic feeling when reading, and I cant wait for each new chapter. Jan 15, 2025Exceptional X-Men #5 explores the emotional and moral challenges faced by its characters and offers thoughtful commentary on the X-Men's legacy. However, its uneven pacing, sparse action, and absence of key team dynamics prevent it from being a standout issue. Fans invested in character-driven storytelling may find value here, but others might find it lacking momentum and excitement. Read Full Review

Some solid drama here, though I continue to especially enjoy Ewing's voice for Kate here. That has been one of the strongest aspects of this run so far, along with Carnero's incredibly clean art. I appreciated the focus on Thao here, although she still remains the character I'm least interested in of the three introduced in this run.

I applaud Eve Ewing for not shying away from addressing Kitty's recent past, however, it's just not possible to justify the murders she has committed during the Fall of X storyline. Kitty, one of my favorite X-Men ever, is a ruined character, and it isn't Ewing's fault. However, the issue of Kitty's mass murder is brushed aside pretty easily, and this is a problem. The art is great as usual, and the writing feels natural, but I feel this series is written for a younger generation with different sensibilities. Gen X guys like me just don't give a shit about those teenager's issues. So the question is, who is reading this title? The younger people that the series caters to or people like me, who just want a great superhero book, but are g more

They say that hate is learned. Congratulations Eve Ewing, thanks to you I've learned to hate every one of these characters. This title is called Exceptional X-Men. Why? There is nothing exceptional about any of these characters and they sure as hell ain't X-Men. They've done nothing for five freaking issues! I can't even hate read this dreck anymore. I'm out.
