Heroes Reborn: Marvel Double Action is a stunning example of how an homage can work so very well when done right. Seeley and Jurgens have crafted a story that's exciting as it takes classic comics elements and remakes them for modern readers. Nighthawk and Falcon are subbed into the Night Gwen Stacy Died, and it works far better than it has any right to. The art team absolutely nails the Bronze Age look. And the script did three things that really impressed me: 1) Streamlined the original story and massaged Nighthawk into it seamlessly, 2) Made it a vehicle for meaningful character development for him, and 3) wrapped it all up in a self-contained package (it took Spidey months if not years to fully unpack the effects of the original story). This blows the rest of the event away in terms of quality -- yet it lifts up the other issues instead of overshadowing them. Young Squadron, for example, is improved by this issue's added context.

I gotta appreciate how Nighthawk shows some layers here. He genuinely believes in doing the right thing and it shows how people connected to him steer him in the right direction. And how the death of one, while it didn't push him over the edge did lead him to becoming more ruthless. By Mephisto, he's got one over Spider-Man by living up to his great power and responsibility ethos.

An excellent issue! While I didn't get the sense of nostalgia this issue is clearly going for as I'm not that old and never read the original story, the tragedy and suspense sure did. Even without my prior knowledge I thouroghly enjoyed it as it's just very well written. It can be a bit cheesy at times and the amount of D-tours (small moments that don't go anywhere) are annoying but that's not enough to keep the issue back. I just chuck that up to the style of the era its harkening back to for the most part. Makes the mix of Spider-Man stuff also work better as it causes less of a tonal shift. A critique of mine in regards to Heroes Reborn #5.

This is fine, but it really fails to deliver on its promise. It isn't able to recreate the tension, the bombast, and the overall feeling of the original. It gives a bad attempt at copying Gerry Conway's style of writing at first, but that kind of gives way eventually. I mean, I know not everyone has read the original, or if they had it may not be fresh, but like... this copies all the story beats, and then makes them less compelling and feels less like a natural development and more like a checklist that has to be hit. Compare Norman regaining his memories in this to him regaining them in ASM #121. It just pales in comparison. Maybe I'm just too harsh here, but... a 5 is definitely not harsh given how much I enjoy the issue that this issue is directly invoking. more

It's okay to be honest. This is basically The Night Gwen died but with Batman, yet I have no idea how Nighthawk crushed that glider

It's in the story, alchemical strength boost when night falls, it's also what helped kill Falcon; apparently that means when there's barely any sun left.
