There's a story bartenders tell about the devil. That at closing time, he chooses a bar and walks in the door. He'll want to talk about his day. If you listen and survive, he'll give you a tip. The story isn't true, but occasionally it amuses Mephisto to play along. And when he's spent the day spying on all the earthly gods and what exactly they're going to do about FEAR ITSELF, you'll want to hear what he has to say.
Throughout my years of reading comics, especially ones featuring Asgardians, it's not been usual for me to chuckle audibly. Journey Into Mystery has not only done that, but it's also made me laugh out loud, and that's certainly a credit to Gillen and his abilities. Read Full Review
What can I say, I'm a sucker for Marvel mythology. Be it the various gods or the assorted demons running around the Marvel U, I love reading about them. Mephisto, when written properly, is a great character, and here? He was definitely written properly. There's really not much more I can say about this comic. In recent issues of Journey Into Mystery, a de-aged Loki has traversed the Nine Realms in an attempt to save Asgard against the intimidating forces of the Serpent. He's been to Hel, Midgard, Limbo and back on his mission and has rubbed elbows with the likes of Surtur, Volstagg and Tyr. Yes, the lack of both Loki and any true plot progression makes this book seem like filler, but Gillen accomplishes more with the story than meets the eye at first. By the end, Gillen sets up at least one major conflict for Loki in the near future, and the involvement of so many high-level villains suggests the young god's troubles are just beginning.
