‘Silk' is a series that is full of very old-school energy in the sense that it takes time to build the life and world of its character alongside all of the superhero action moments. There needs to be an ongoing series right now for Cindy Moon, it's long past due, as she's among the best of the newer generation of Marvel Comics characters. Read Full Review
Bits and PiecesSilk #4 is a middling issue with amusing character interactions between Cindy and her friends and a little bit of action toward the end. If you're into fluffy, slice-of-life storytelling with a superhero twist and all the dramatic punch of a Scooby-Doo adventure, you'll enjoy this issue a lot. Read Full Review
Behind her costume, the girl is trying to find her own place, and this issue expands on the dilemma with grace. Read Full Review
That said, Silk #4 isn't all gloom and doom. In fact it has what must be one of the most unexpected Marvel team-ups as all time as the decrepit Silk is driven into battle by none other than J. Jonah Jameson. Talk about a weirdly perfect team-up that would make Spider-Man's head explode. Now if they only had a plan. Read Full Review
Cindys final confrontation with the witch should be interesting. Emily Kims unique perspective on the classic Marvel web-slinger serial has been a great deal of fun. Its been enjoyably quirky and off-center, but Kims pacing has felt strange. At no point in the series thus far has the pacing felt stranger than this issue. However, Cindy Moon continues to be fun in Kims hands, and fun goes a long way. Read Full Review
Silk #4 was not as strong as the rest of the issues in this story arc, but I remain optimistic that this issue will lead to an exciting conclusion. Read Full Review
OK, I loved this.
Our elders rarely get to show up like this in our funny books. And yeah, Silk isn't an elder, but there were so many great moments that Emily Kim took advantage of by mining her premise.
The art continues to be my favorite thing about this and the interactions between Silk and JJ are fantastic.
The villain is the weakest element by this point, with the arc coming to a close, I hope they find a way to make her interesting. Which is a shame cuz her power set is really interesting already!
It's par for the course for this volume: Great art, an exquisite inner voice for Cindy, and a solid but slow plot that's prone to repetition. I could certainly understand a reader dismissing the first two-thirds of this issue as repetitive "getting old sucks" moaning.
I have faith in the author, though. The thematic threads between Silk's current old-ification and the FOMO worries that started the arc are already in place and I expect them to pull everything together neatly in #5.
But I'll also confess I don't expect much out of the big hero-villain showdown.
