Overall, this fresh attempt at rebooting Robotech is a stylish endeavour that aims at modernising an animated classic. Fans of Robotech and Macross alike may be torn when it comes to some of the changes to the aesthetic, but at its heart, it's the classic story that we all know and love. It'll be interesting to see where the series is going to head, especially with changes to the plot. Readapting THE MACROSS SAGA for new readers, ROBOTECH #1 takes on the source material in brilliant ways. With a potent plot and highly detailed art, this issue's only failing is in its development of its supporting cast. If you are a fan of giant robot fights, this comic is definitely for you. Robotech #1 is a solid start for the series balancing action, character development and an entertaining story. The story fast forwards to the right point so even though the Robotech Project has been in place for years there's still a lot more to learn about it and the characters. For new readers not familiar with Robotech, maybe you've heard of this legendary series but never sat down to watch it, I say start with this version. Wood and Turini have crafted a striking new take here without all the baggage and it seems geared towards a more sophisticated audience than what the original series intended. Robotech is what got me into so many things but it's also a property that I don't believe has to be completely faithfully adapted. I'm hoping, based on this opening issue, that we're just getting the foundations laid out as before and then moving on to getting something new added to it so that it's expanded rather than just a strict adaptation. I'm a big fan of Brian Wood so I'm hopeful that he'll be bringing some new things to the mix here and his work with Marco Turini should bear some pretty good fruit. This should be fun for people new to the property but it may be a bit odd and uncertain for those that have years, or decades, of exposure to it and aren't quite sure why it's getting a new adaptation. The art in no way is bad and doesn't stick to original animation style. But with the nostalgic feel of the story, it could've better fitting to stick to the source. With a couple of off putting faces from Claudia Grant and Rick Hunter's portrayal as Tom Cruise getting off the set of Top Gun, the revised character designs work. All the mech suits and background art look great and are the eye candy of the book.Bits and Pieces:Take a trip down memory lane if you loved Robotech as a kid. Just don't expect a new tale just yet. After all this time apart from Robotech, this was a great way to reconnect with it. Naturally, I'll be most anxious to see all the cool robots in action, but revisiting the story in general will be fun.
