Happy to have put it on your radar! :) . . . yeah! this book is AWESOME!! i cannot tell you how long exactly that i've been trying to figure out the reading order sequence for the different series. it's set up SO well.

I know, Grant is a great writer who clearly puts a lot of thought into his work, which cannot be said for many modern writers. His Doom Patrol is likely my favorite comic of all time, I can't tell you how many times I've read each issue of his run on the title. Unfortunately, the series was never the same after he left, but I still read the new issues since I love the characters so much. Yeah, it's clear you put a lot of work into that reading sequence, which I can appreciate.

thank you. i bought all the issues in this collection as they were being release, and i’ve been trying to figure out the proper reading order for YEARS now. at long last now i finally have a definitive reading order. ^__^ . . . this is so true! Grant really plans his stories out, and must revise the hell out of them. every time i re-read one of his comics, the level of clues and foreshadowing that emerge always amazes me! current modern day writers can only dream of being able to replicate him.

yeah. Grant’s Doom Patrol is in a class all it’s own! sadly the series never reached the same level as it did when he was writing it.

Morrison's JLA run. . . . now THAT is just amazing!!!

Yep… I was really hoping somebody else would be writing the new Doom Patrol series… but it looks like we're stuck with Gerard Way. I've been meaning to re-read his JLA run. I remember reading it a while back and really enjoying it.

The only modern writer that seems to come close for me is Jeff Lemire. Gideon Falls is the best comic I have read in ages, and parts of it remind me of something Grant would write. Other than that, the only other current writers I consistently enjoy are Kieron Gillen and Chip Zdarsky. Neither of them writes stories as complex, but both write entertaining stories, usually with good messages as well. But Grant is something else. He and Alan Moore are definitely my favorite comic book writers.

well even when Gerard writes Doom Patrol it come out what- every 3 or 4 months? that’s almost to the point of being irrelevant. things aren’t looking too good for DC right now. Vertigo ended. Mad Magazine ended. DC didn’t even bother setting a publishers booth at SDCC. and now there is speculation that under AT&T that they are going to stop publishing comics altogether. i just hope they keep reprinting classics as they have been. and as long as we definitely get Morrison Batman Omnibus VOL. 3.

Yikes… that sounds pretty bad. I sure will miss the one… or maybe two comics I still enjoy from DC. Yeah, I never understood how Gerard's DP run comes out so infrequently yet always felt so damn rushed. Now he doesn't even write it any more, just plots the series. Some guy named Jeremy Lambert scripts the series now and the dialogue is even worse!

yeah. i'm going to lament the greatness that was once DC finally closing shop. but it's not like they were giving us consistently good stories anyway. so it feels like it's been a slow and painful death. ...i think i know why Gerard's run still felt rushed though it took forever to come out. he was trying to be something that he's not (aka Grant Morrison) people built him up with a lot of expecation and hype because he used to be a pop star. but time reveals what is truly classic or not.

Yeah… Let's see. In terms of current stories I consistently like… I like DCeased a lot. Detective Comics is fun but nothing special. Jimmy Olsen has only had one issue but looks to be fun, but that's just a goofy little comedy series. Marvel definitely has a lot more series I like. Right now, though, I'm really starting to appreciate Image. They're the publisher I trust right now, and I feel more inclined to pick up a new issue from them than any other publisher.

The creator owned aspect of their series definitely helps, but even so, something about all of the series I've read feels so much more professional than any of the other indie publishers. Like this is where the real talent goes to get their stories told. I dunno, I'm just spitballing here. As for Gerard Way… yeah. I feel like he gets praised way too much because he already had a fan base from his band.

Ultimately his series and the entire Young Animal imprint is nothing but a poor imitation of Grant Morrison and his greatest works. I doubt anyone will remember Gerard Way's run in the years to come. If anything they will laugh at it. I know I will at least. I'm holding out hope for a truly perfect creative team for DP in the years to come, but the problem is, Grant Morrison was just a perfect fit, he and Doom Patrol just seemed to click.

You know you've done well when the creator of a property praises your run on it as the greatest.

Grant's Doom Patrol was definitely the greatest it's ever been. everything else pales in comparison. especially whatshisname's cheap imitation. i do agree. whatshisname's DP will eventually get forgotten about. Image Comics has had some great series over the years, though i haven't checked in with them lately. Marvel just keeps cranking out as much junk as possible. they are flooding the market to the point of burn out. just steer clear of IDW. they used to be really good, but not any more.

Man, you should read Die and Gideon Falls. They are easily my favorite series right now. Both exemplify creators at the top of their game. I'm still a bit of a new reader with Image, luckily my friend has been a fan for years, so he's helped guide me through which series are worth reading. Right now, I just started catching up on a few current series: Sea of Stars, Fairlady and Unearth. And I liked… all of them actually.

Yeah, after I discovered my love for Image, I tried some of the other indie publishers. Boom's got some good stuff, a lot of it is targeted at audiences much younger than me though. Dark Horse is pretty meh, they've got Black Hammer and that's about it. Valiant is incredibly inaccessible to anyone not familiar with that universe. Dynamite is where third rate properties go to get five issue miniseries written and illustrated by subpar creators.

I'll be honest, I'm not a huge fan of a lot of IDW's properties, so I've steered clear. In terms of Marvel, they have the best mainstream superhero series at the moment: the Immortal Hulk. They also have probably my favorite mainstream writer currently: Chip Zdarsky. So all of his current stuff is great. The X-Men relaunch is as great as everyone says. It's mainly those series that make me prefer Marvel over DC. Yeah, no nothing will ever be as good as Grant's DP.

Arnold Drake's run is a lot of fun, if you don't mind the very Silver-Age feel to it. Other than that, Giffen's brief little run was not bad, but I know he can write better. The Byrne run was atrociously bad and Arcudi's is very mediocre.

Have you read Scott's Snyder's black mirror? I honestly think that's the best dickbats story ever and Snyder's best Batman story.

drwasheewashee - sorry for the late reply. i actually had Snyder's Detective run in my pull-list back when he was doing Black Mirror. i very much agree that it is his best Batman story. my favorite Dick Grayson Batman story is definitely Morrison's Batman and Robin run, followed by Batman Prodigal. it's just a pity that Prodigal had to be immediately followed by Troika, that was just 'Eh'.
