This book is a delightful slice of life, even if it's a rather exceptional life. Kate and Emma were pirate queens of an intergalactic trade organization and two of the leaders of an island paradise of super-powered immortals. The plummet into the mundane to unpack the trauma of losing that life is such a surprisingly fantastic approach that gives us something quiet and introspective as compared to the rest of the line and particularly the other two core books which aren't nearly as grounded or character-driven. I dreaded the return to mundanity when this book was announced, but Kate going from a life of unlimited resources and adventures across spacetime to sharing an apartment with a childhood friend while bartending really resonates. While we've seen her do something like this before, it didn't have the emotional weight and tragedy that is does here. I'm so in love with the story and the cast, particularly Bronze. Don't get me started on the art which so perfectly suits the tone. more

So much to love here really, but what shines through the most is the characterization(honestly I don't know when was the last time I read a kitty I enjoyed so much) and just how much this series has space to breathe and not be concerned with battles and big issues. Obviously Uncanny is way more refined, but still is something, that I can read and never be tired of, also because I feel like it takes its time in a way a lot of the comics that come from the Big 2 don't.

I like the snappy nature of the dialogue, it feels mostly genuine, and it fits the lower stakes, it may come as cliche sometimes, or like too much, but it's like when it starts tipping its toes in those water, it pulls them out and for the important moments, it works really well. This issue actually used the snappy nature of the dialogue with the plot when better both with comedic intent and also surprises to shake the pages, but again not with too much to stray away from what this book is. Again it's like it tips its toes in a more aggressive territory and it's immediately back to slice of life/ the endless afternoon.

But again it all works because the dialogue and the characters act so well together. There are small phrases, that indicate the characters in a very clear way, borderline too clear, but they are sprinkled between a lot of dialogue, that feel natural for people who have been through what those have been through, so they are never too much. This way it's not really hard to analyze what the characters think or feel, both are kinda intertwined, but again very clearly. I am a pretty young guy and because of my job I'm in a lot of contact with a lot of kids, especially teens, so I find the portrayal here to be quite accurate to a lot of those harmless, kinda random kids I meet, that kinda are this figuring out how to communicate. Those are lost kids, they are not really strong and like Kitty Pryde in the 80s, they feel vulnerable.But even now, part of the reason why Kitty is so compelling to me is because she is vulnerable. The comics let her not make her mind and even when made her mind, she is still not sure what exactly she is doing and this goes great with the chiller vibe, because the kids are also without much ideas about what they wanna do.

Definitely, the art gives a very strong helping hand, with those expressions soft but very clear expressions and specific body language and a more brownish color scheme bringing a lot of comfort.

The pacing is also something I love. It's slow, but it does not feel as such. Again because the characters are both well-defined and are interesting, they are just interesting personalities and their clashes are also like that. I also like that especially in this issue we get to see a character's identity and how this character sees themself be affected by his mutation, which again is quite claremontian or morissonian(?)(their ideas are extension of Claremont's anyway).

It's a triumph for Eve Ewing to have so many ideas about what she wants out of the characters and to infuse the comics with so much personality especially so much of Kitty's personality and the whole idea behind her existence. So even tho we've seen Kate in similar position, to me it feels like progress, or at least interesting steps more

This was a debut worthy of a character like Storm! The art, script, action and execution were excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish.

Storm #1 excels in character-driven storytelling, delivering a debut issue that does justice to Ororo's rich history & elevates her to even new heights. Ayodele's writing is a love letter to the iconic X-Men, Avengers, and Wakandan queen, distilling the essence of her past titles into a narrative that's deeply human.

Murewa Ayodele's script is a thoughtful exploration of that very aspect, peeling back the layers that reveal a vulnerable, empathetic person beneath w/o sacrificing her strengths. He acknowledges her impressive résumé, but never loses sight of her emotional core. This is the X-Men at their best – a celebration of mutant powers and human frailties, reminding us that even the strongest mutant is still a person. Ayodele's use of third-party narration sets the stage, while his use of dialogue gives Storm ample opportunities to showcase why she’s achieved her current status.

As outstanding as Ayodele's writing is, Lucas Werneck's art is the true star of the issue. His designs bring Ororo to life in breathtaking fashion, radiating an otherworldly energy that's simply captivating. Every panel is a testament to Werneck's skill, as he effortlessly captures Storm's regal presence, her fierce determination, and her quiet vulnerability. As promised, the multiple outfit changes throughout the issue are a delightful bonus, each one a stunning showcase of her beauty & Werneck's attention to dramatic detail. Beyond her outfits, even subtle body movement conveyed Storm’s gravitas. Colors by Alex Guimares & Fer Sifuentes-Sijo add extra vibrancy to the artwork, imbuing pages w/ a celestial energy that's nothing short of mesmerizing.

In short, Storm #1 is not only the best solo title launch of this new era but also a landmark issue that cements Storm's position as a singular superhero. Building on the foundations laid by Al Ewing's X-Men Red, Ayodele & the creative team gave us everything you could want in a debut issue, especially one for a goddess. more

Not much to say except that Milligan & Allred did it better twenty years ago with X-Force/X-Statix. This was entirely derivative and worse than that, it was bland. My fears about this relaunch are in full force in this book. Very disappointing.

Pitch perfect

Ewing says goodbye to the X-Men with a big swing that offers up a Storm/Magneto story unlike any either character has ever had.

The emancipation of Ororo continues. Finally, after three decades, she is being written as the force of nature she is—not just in power but in presence, personality, and effectiveness. She isn’t the only one. Sunspot is getting some shine, and Arakko is just everything. Ewing has humanized these people in a way Hickman never could. As great as he is, his work doesn’t have the humanity of Ewing’s. This book is perfect. more

We did not come to make love; we came to make war.

We’ve never had an X-Men book quite like this, and it is all the better for it. The characterization, plot, pace, politics, world-building, spectacle, dialogue, and, my goddess, the art are just all on point. The cast is a great mix of old and new in new situations with new dynamics that are rooted in characterization and history. This book feels made for me, and I couldn’t ask for more.

From the core cast to the politics, I feel like book was made for me. The plotting, characterization, and dialogue are so strong, and the art is dynamic and stunning. What a creative team.

This was unoriginal and cheesy. It’s a fun idea, but there’s nothing clever or surprising here. Save your coins.

One of my favorite single issues ever and definitely my favorite thing ever written by Duggan. There’s so much more wonder and excitement to be drawn from the premise of the X-Men than just fighting. This was a beautifully rendered tale of cooperation and the power of a group working with a singular purpose. Pepe Larraz is the true star of the Krakoan Era, and this book is a blazing reminder.
