This is a well-made compilation of Swamp Thing tales. The characters are mostly well-written and easy to understand despite the brevity of each story. The art from each creator looks fantastic throughout the book and the lettering is solid. The stories themselves are good too, although some of them could've done with a few more pages. They each get their point across to the reader well though so I can't complain. Not a scary book like the title would imply but one that's definitely worth having. Read Full Review
Although I love that DC is doubling down on the scares this Halloween, this Swamp Thing special falls a little short. The thing is, the stories are fine and the artwork is incredible. It's just that it's missing that tie to the DC Universe. What's great about stories like these is that you know they're set in the same world as an Amazon princess fighting for justice and a caped alien hero leaping buildings in a single bound, yet there are still these dark terrors lurking in the shadows. All of these writers did fine work. Anything Swamp Thing is a big undertaking with what it is following, but these creators all created reasonably horrific tales perfect for an anthology.
Like most anthologies this one is hit-and-miss. The book-end stories from Ram V are really good, especially the first one, and I loved Tynion's short. The rest range from dull to serviceable.
At the Heart of Trees was fine. I got a little tiny baby kick out of it taking place in the Great Dismal Swamp, since there's a very interesting history to it, and I'm glad to say it was barely explored whatsoever. But it is a spooky place, nonetheless. They do ghost hunts there!
Ring of Stones was fine as well. It held my interest, at least. This is why I don't like short story anthologies, they never have time for a proper build and pay off.
Sleeping Giant was not enjoyable to me. It just didn't really connect. I felt myself waiting for the story to get going, but it never felt like it had.
No Sign of the Enemy was fine. The concept was sound, but I don't think the writer really hit the mark. Again, I cha more
