Who would have thought that mutants in Heaven could wind up being one of the more heartfelt stories in recent X-Men lore? Yet Jason Aaron and Ed McGuinness take a nutty concept and score a home run, all by distilling Nightcrawler to his core - and extremely varied - essence. In so doing, Aaron has performed a little bit of continuity magic, blowing up all those small character details of the Claremont (and even Chuck Austen) years, all while refitting them back into something that's surprisingly, cohesively relatable. Mutant politics are well and good, but the strength of the X-Men franchise has been showing that no matter what your mutation, you're still human underneath - and it's that return to form that makes Nightcrawler and the Amazing X-Men live up to their names. It's easy to roll your eyes at something titled 'Amazing' and okay corny line at the end of the issue alert. But it's also hard not to be amazed at something that honestly captures the essence of X-Men so strikingly well. This so far has been the X-Men title I've been waiting for. Read Full Review

Aaron & McGuinness are four issues into Amazing and this swashbuckling adventure for the fate of Heaven & Hell is only getting stronger. This is the best X-Men book on the market today and it shows just how locked in Jason Aaron is to what makes the X-Men tick. This is the must read title coming out of the X-Office and Nightcrawler fans, if you still haven't picked up this series act quickly. I am 12 years old again. Aaron and McGuinness have transported me back to the age where my eyes are filled with problems only mutants have, and my heart soars at the thought of how they overcome any obstacle, especially death. Amazing X-men's inaugural arc has been, pun intended fully, one hell of a ride. Now that everyone is back together, my inner 12 year old is pumping his fists in the air, totally on board for the final installment where my favorite heroes get to beat the baddie and save the day. At this point, the weakest element of this story is its villain. Aaron has improved Azazel as a character, but not necessarily elevated him to the point where he makes for a particularly memorable or imposing threat. And the fact that he doesn't even appear in this issue doesn't help. Hopefully issue #5 can turn things around in that regard. Read Full Review

Along with the various reunions writer Jason Aaron reveals the origin of the Bamfs and lays the groundwork for the possible cost of Nightcrawler's current heroism which may have serious repercussions for the still-dead hero and his teammates very soon. Worth a look. Read Full Review

Amazing X-Men is a comic that is bringing together a lot of A-list named X-Men to rescue Nightcrawler from the afterlife. It turns out, in this issue, that he is rescuing them. It's a fun ride and is definitely a book to check out. You will find some sweet moments, some fun moments, plenty of action and a lot of big time visuals. Jason Aaron basically takes a month off from the Azazel plot to assemble his forces and do some spectacular character work. That doesn't make for a very even issue, but, especially combined with McGuinness' artwork, it's the best there is at what it does and what it does is go straight for the feels. Read Full Review

"Amazing X-Men" #4 is going to please a lot of McGuinness fans, and with good reason. It's a beautiful comic, and the sequences with Nightcrawler himself are written well and give a fun little bonus in character backstory for him and Beast.
