When all is said and done, Marvel Snapshots: Captain Marvel #1delivers a beautiful narrative about the importance of becoming the person one wishes to be. Jennis lessons in this book can easily be applied to many of us. And just like Jenni, hopefully, all who read will be inspired to go higher, further, faster than ever before. Read Full Review
The Captain Marvel issue of Snapshots is a solid standalone story about Carol Danvers and Kamala Khan inspiring a teen girl. Kamala steals the spotlight, though. This comic has strong art and sound characterization, but it doesn't inspire readers to seek out more Captain Marvel stories. It DOES promote further exploration of Ms. Marvel -- and if it gets people to dive into her 2014 series, it will have done some good beyond simply entertaining on its own. Read Full Review
Claire Roes art at least lends a playfulness that does benefit the material. Alex Rosss art on the original Marvels series was very much a grandiose, ultra-realistic aesthetic that highlighted the lofty status of superheroes compared to the street-level characters it followed, but Im glad to see that these one-shots have had room to do their own thing and not stay beholden to the original vision. Her style lends itself to character work over superhero action (which she can also do), so when Jennis discovery of the Avengers unfolds into a double-page splash layout, it does give off the sense of landing right in the middle of a superhero battle. While some of the dialogue from Jenni is a bit "old man trying to write a teen," the intent here is pretty good. I liked it well enough.
I liked this one. It had good vibes.
A frustrated teen activist gets to watch an A-list superhero fight and then get one-on-one inspiration from Ms. and Captain Marvel. The creators deliver a successful "have the courage to be yourself" message, but that's a super-low bar to clear. I'm consciously setting aside some "missed opportunity" frustration. Carol + Kamala stories are surprisingly rare, and this is a thoroughly "meh" entry on that list. I treasure the little detail about Carol's idol-crush from her piloting days, though.
If you read this and find (correctly) that Kamala's origin flashback is the high point, make sure you read Ms. Marvel (2014). The flashback is a condensed version of that series's #1, and it gets even better from there.
It was an ok story that had some heart.
This is why I'm glad Waid's not getting much work these days, he's gone full lunatic.
