The fight with Venom is epic. Sara Pichelli is drawing the hell out of the beast, and Venom hasn't looked this villainous in a long time. He's a monster of epic proportions! As disarmingly emotional as the death of Peter Parker? Not quite, but taking into account the barely 2 year run Miles has held on Ultimate Spider-Man compared to Peter's 10-plus, it's impressive that this issue comes as close as it does. The usual exquisite characterisations are front and centre, assembled from a truly harmonious gelling of script and art. Plus: epic fight scenes. This book has it all at the moment and is soon to go to some even more interesting places. The end was truly shocking and shows that Bendis does not hold back punches. It was an emotional scene when Miles fights Venom because even with just a small part of his mask ripped off his mom knew it was him instantly. And as any loving mother opened fire on Venom putting herself in danger. Bendis has managed to portray the one thing that shaped Peter's life which was never letting those closest to him die on his account. A failure by Miles that in turn caused him to rip apart his costume and declare that he's done. This issue here truly felt like Spider-Man in it's entirety. Read Full Review

This is Pichelli's last issue. I've said numerous times that she is my favourite Miles artist and the last couple of pages are the epitome of this. With all that has happened to him over the past day it hits the right note of the shock, realisation and anger. This issue also marks Sara Pichelli's final bow on Ultimate Spider-Man. It's a shame, as her art has been a major factor in the book's success so far. The good news is that this issue lets Pichelli put all her varied skills to the test. The action scenes are dynamic, yet also intimate and claustrophobic enough to highlight the personal danger for Miles. The unique fashion and character designs help keep the panels diverse and interesting despite the myriad characters running about the hospital. The facial work is excellent, really highlighting the varied emotions. Two panels in particular stand out as key emotional beats, and they would fail miserably if Pichelli couldn't render them with the emotional gravitas needed. Again, it's really unfortunate that Pichelli can't continue to render Miles' world, but at least David Marquez is sticking around. Read Full Review

Bendis has proven once again that he is the master of the Ultimate universe. Miles Morales is earning his hero stripes the hard way, which is the way it should be. In my opinion, Ultimate Comics Spider-Man is one of most consistently great comic books on the shelf today. There is no doubt that Bendis knack for storytelling on an emotional scale coupled with Pichelli and Ponsors unique talents will be more than up to the task. Read Full Review

While ULTIMATE COMICS SPIDER-MAN #22 is a very fun and action packed issue, it's a pretty big downer. This is is going to change the direction of this book in a big way, and while I'm not the keenest on the idea of death being used as a plot device again, it's still, overall, a great issue. Once our hero reaches the hospital, he faces Venom head on, just like Mara Hill told him toowait! Hold on! Just let me scan this issue for a minuteah! No Miles, she said dont face Venom head on. This arc ends with someone receiving a real nasty bad boo-boo. We also discover who Venoms host is (I didnt even think their was a host). This event sets up the next issue called Never Again a tribute to Spider-Man No More. Read Full Review
