Hellboy's immortal foe!
Sent to kill Hellboy by the Baba Yaga in Darkness Calls, Koshchei the Deathless hinted at a long and tragic life before being enslaved to the Russian witch. Now Koshchei relives every horrible act on his road to immortality and beyond, with none other than Hellboy himself-in Hell.
Mignola returns to Hell and to the bizarre folklore that's filled some of his greatest books, reuniting with one of his favorite collaborators, Ben Stenbeck (Frankenstein Underground, Witchfinder: In The Service of Angels, Baltimore).
The fall of a man due to the intervention of the supernatural makes for outstanding reading. Proceeding through this tale, a reader will wonder if Koshchei damned himself or was cursed by others. The strong story and fantastic visuals make this a “must-read.” Read Full Review
Who is the larger figure in people's minds, the seemingly unstoppable hero or the character who would fell such a larger than life person? Koshchei would be easy to write off as a horrible person for his attack on Hellboy… but here we learn of his own horrid story and how he came to be who he is now. Can Hellboy (or us readers) find sympathy for someone such as he? It's an interesting situation, a world that is full of killing and horrors, who do we side with and what crimes are we willing to look past and for what reasons? If you had eternity to spend with someone who was determined to kill you, could you forgive them? For the start of a series this is extremely compelling and certainly well worth adding to the collection! Read Full Review

The first issue is a fantastic one adding another layer to the Hellboy universe and as usual mixes the fantastical and the grounded for a perfect mix. Read Full Review
While basically an offshoot of Hellboy: Darkness Calls, this series functions as a perfectly accessible standalone story in the same way so many Hellboy/BPRD projects do. Mike Mignola and Ben Stenbeck chronicle the origin story of this undead Slavic killer, framed by a charming little bar sequence in Hell. That story gets off to a strong start in this first issue. I have to admit that Im not overly well versed in Hellboy lore but I found this a very entertaining read. As a standalone dark folk tale it hits all the right notes. So if you find yourself in Hell with some time to kill, why not pull up a chair and listen in; I know I'm going to. Read Full Review
While he's the furthest thing from a sympathetic character, I'm intrigued by this look back into the past of Koshchei. The framing of the having the story told in a pub in Hell is a nice touch as well. If I have concerns it's with Mignola finding enough content to fill six issues. Worth a look. Read Full Review
Hellboy fans and mythology buffs will find much to admire in Koshchei The Deathless #1. It seems unlikely that new readers will be won over by this tale, but Mignola's story will prove perfectly accessible to them. Couple a rich story with some equally enjoyable artwork and you have one fine comic. Read Full Review
There's hope that the remaining five issues will be better than this first issue. Hell, anymore I'll take a weaker first issue to have a better overall series. Sadly though, it felt like a tired story that Mignola finally got around to telling, rather than something any fan needed to read. We'll see on the next one, but for now, it's all a bit dull.
