Geoff Johns and Jim Lee are back together again. With a set up for a new villain, it's starting to look like the team may soon have their hands full. Johns continues to build up the characters and the relationships between the different members. It's a nice touch but feels a little out of place with the solitary feeling we get from the characters' solo titles. We simply haven't really seen any mention of the League in their books. The bonus of the SHAZAM/Billy Batson back up with Gary Frank continues to be a delight. We're still in the origin stage but it's getting to be fun seeing Billy's character develop, even if it's a pretty big departure from his attitude before the "New 52." The ending is promising that something will happen very soon. JUSTICE LEAGUE is getting back on track in being a book about the team dealing with each other and with big threats. It's going to be interesting to see if we ever start seeing more of a mention of the team in their solo titles. Read Full Review

What's actually interesting about this new arc of Justice League is that Graves is a villain who has (supposedly, or at least seemingly) been wronged by the Justice League directly and wants to take his revenge. This is interesting because it's been quite a long while since there was a JLA story that actually connected to the League. More often than not, the League is called upon to handle situations like alien invasions, criminal masterminds, and worldwide catastrophes, all of which have no meaningful connection to the League. Mostly, the League is reserved for massive threats. Giving the team a more personal villain might be a fantastic way to give a little more characterization and depth to a crew that readers haven't yet received. Read Full Review

That said, this comic's successes are far more memorable than its flaws. From a process perspective, I think we're seeing yet another reinvention of Geoff Johns, and after some initial fitful starts, he might be finding his balance between spectacle and substance. But ultimately, Johns and Lee are delivering what we wanted all along " we want to see our favorite characters in the same place, playing off one another and showing us how they compare and contrast. Overall, this whole issue kind of falls flat. Superheroes do some stuff, feel bad for themselves, and the villain plans his next move. Both stories are really going to need to kick it into high-gear next issue. Reading comics should be fun, not a chore. Read Full Review

"Justice League" #9 is an enjoyable enough fun story, but it is also very much an opening chapter in the next grand case for the Justice League. We learn of a new foe, but only through the equivalent of fish stories -- no direct exposure of the Justice League against this new foe, but rather a gauge of fearsomeness offered to the League from other recognizable foes. The return of artist Jim Lee means the overall quality of the art improves, but once again we get odd group shots where characters are presented and posturing at odd angles while in battle or attempting to communicate with each other. The back-up story gives us Billy standing up for his foster siblings (but still being a jerk), and Sivana unearthing a mystical tomb. It's certainly not great, but for JL fans it is worth a look. Since the very first issue, this title was always pretty to look at, but lacked in the plot department. With this new issue, I really think this series will eventually pick up.
