Descender is an immersive and captivating narrative set behind beautiful panels. Its a work of great art. Lemire and Nguyen deliver a backstory in this issue that emotionally bind you to the pages and make you part of the story. Theres no telling where these two visionaries can take us, and that, perhaps, is the best part. Read Full Review
Damn this book for being as engaging as it is. This issue shifts gears just a bit to spend its time working on Andy and Blugger, two surprising characters that I really like a whole lot considering their minimal roles so far overall. While I crave more of what's going on elsewhere, this issue does a great job of bringing it all to life. Nguyen continues to delight in his visual design of things, but he's a bit more restricted here with what he can do since it's mostly in-ship material or flashback pieces to the mining colony that's a little looser and done with a far simpler color palette. It's all very appropriate to the storyline, though, so it's not a complaint. But the shift in tone through color and location definitely stands out against the first seven installments of the series. Once again, a big praise must go to the art of Descender. Everything, and I do mean everything, is a watercolour. In this issue in particular Nguyen's art reaches new highs in" urm" a certain scene on (or near) a certain planet. Nothing more I can add without entering the spoiler area. Read Full Review
You know by now that the art in Descender is fantastic, but the writing in this issue was a little slow for me. Overall, though, still a fairly good comic, and I still have very high hopes for issue 9, to be expected January 13, 2016. Read Full Review
If you're not already reading Descender, you're missing the only sci-fi that could have competed with Star Wars this month. It's a tale of boys grown up wrong, and it'll break your heart, but it'll be a gorgeous heartbreak. This book is like watching a star slowly die, and I mean that in the best, most Malickian/Tree of Life sense"it reminds you that innocence only means something when you lose it. Read Full Review
Favourite issue so far! Who better than Nguyen to imbue emotion into an off-the-shelf robot? The crook of the neck, the wide-eyed look of realisation - it's so stunningly nuanced. And those panels of gnashing of teeth! Hats off.
My favorite series going right now and one of the best, most beautiful series I've ever read.
Wow. Best issue yet!
I wouldn't have expected an issue without TIM-21 to be this good! Andy's character development is excellent here and he seems to making an unlikely friend despite his anti-social nature.
Weakest issue so far. The flashbacks didn't really added much, and the action in the present wasn't well drawn nor interesting.
While there is some decent character development and a [unsurprising] further look into history, there is little plot advancement in this issue. Also, in my opinion, the lack of detail in the art during the wide shots of space travel/flight didn't lend its self to those scenes. Overall, still a pretty good issue and still a great series.
