This first issue lays down the groundwork for whats to come in this series. You are introduced to the 13 families, the 13 killers, and our group of unsuspecting towns people. The basic outline of the game is also laid out, so you understand it, but it leaves some things open for surprises later. James Tynion IV does a fantastic job of laying down this groundwork and setting the expectations for where this series is going to go. Read Full Review
Exquisite Corpses #1 may have a familiar feeling, but Tynion and Walsh elevate the comic with their own spin, along with stunning visuals and interesting character work. The expanded, 60-page, first issue not only lays down the foundation for the serieswhich is likely to be a gripping and thrilling ridebut also gives each character introduction some breathing room. If the rest of the series is even close to this first issue, we're in for something truly special. This is absolutely a must-read horror comic. Read Full Review
Exquisite Corpses #1 delivers exactly what its title promises: it's bloody, brutal, and beautiful. It introduces a twisted new mythology, a loaded cast, and a setting ready to explode. This is prestige horror with comic book flair, and it absolutely rules. I'm already rooting for some of these killers (and kinda terrified by others), and I can't wait to see how Oak Valley burns. Walsh delivers beautiful art throughout the issue. The human story is beautifully detailed and the introduction of the killers looks delightfully scary. Read Full Review
Every few years, voters march to the polls. They wait in line to stand in a booth and fill circles on pieces of paper. Then, they watch the leaders they voted into office do as they like for the next several years. News providers and conspiracy theorists claim to tell us how our country functions. But behind the veneer of civilization, the people who run the United States prepare for a battle. Somehow, Exquisite Corpses Ashcan seems more accurate than the latest C-SPAN broadcast. Exquisite Corpses Ashcan Edition is a great way in which to set up this newly derived universe from the wonderful mind of James Tynion IV, the art from Michael Walsh, although only 9 real pages of art, was fantastic and fit well with the horror style, with lots of different uses of perspectives and close ups, it felt almost as if I was skimming over the storyboard for a new Movie, which was complimented wonderfully by the colours of Jordie Bellaire. The art by Mirchael Walsh, color by Jordie Bellaire, and lettering by Becca Carey is fantastic. They give a style that's both grounded at times but also feels like intro screens just before you enter the virtual battlefield. The characters all come off as creepy and deranged with a comic that bounces from grounded to extreme in its deliver. While the residents of Oak Valley are grounded, normal, and somewhat bland in a way, those battling are all caricatures or feel like downloadable avatars to PWN the noobs with. It's a fun blend of comic infused with video game visuals. Read Full Review
Exquisite Corpses #1 is an entertaining introduction to a whole lot of characters and a fun story setup. Through the use of some efficient writing and hyper-stylish art, this issue manages to feel like an action-packed comic without really any action sequences. It's a good start for what looks like a fairly ambitious project. Read Full Review
There are brackets at the end of the issue which suggest mini elimination competitions between three killers eachwith two survivors advancing rot the next roundso there are some pairings that simply arent going to be able to happen, but it should be an interesting series to try to nail into a larger narrative that seeks to put together a world for an even bigger horror-based comic book universe. Its an ambitious project that could prove to be something special if Tynion and company can balance the format of the series against the larger concerns of a big horror narrative. Read Full Review
It's not the most original story ever, but I love a good battle royale. This reminds me a lot of Juni Taisen, in a good way. Interesting characters, interesting lore, great writing, good enough art. This is gonna be a great series.
Its setup is maybe a little derivative, but you can feel that this series is going to make the absolute most of its influences and add on something for good measure.
Some storylines just work and this whole universe that JT is creating, is just flawless. I love a good setting and thank God we got a big fat first issue to get through all the killer intro's.
I'm ready to read this series from the beginning until the end and so should you.
For an issue 1, I really liked it. It wasn't amazing, but I had a lot of fun learning about the world and characters.
I’m all in. It was a long read but it all felt necessary.
I only really picked this up because it was 60 pages for $5.00. That is a good deal. The concept itself is very deriviative and nothing new. The issue was fun, however. Giving us some interesting looking characters and likable protangonist though you know very little about him. The families are all disgusting human beings and I am wondering how the writer is gong to give them their comeupance.
