This is a really interesting first issue to a story arc for me. For those readers old enough to remember, there was a trilogy of day-after-tomorrow arcs that went by the names of Earth X, Universe X, and Paradise X. In the second installment, Multiple Man turns into the Wendigo and begins ravaging the African plains. The site of the raging pack of Wendigo really makes me hope that this is the case, seeing as other elements of those books have come to fruition recently, namely the Inhuman's releasing the Terrigen Mists. Clearly the population ate the human meat from the opening scene, but I'm curious to see why they went through such a complete and terrifying change. So while Jason Aaron's time as an X-Scribe appears to be truly over, Amazing X-Men appears to be in solid, if somewhat nostalgia based, hands going forward with Kyle and Yost at the helm. Kyle, Yost, McGuinness, Farmer, Rosenberg, Caramagna and company deepened my concern as they deliver a complete installment in the adventures of the X-Men, including a nail-biting cliffhanger. While the arc is mostly build-up at the moment, the Wendigos are on the board and the X-Men are rushing to face them. I'm not sure everyone made it out of this issue alive, but Kyle and Yost have succeeded in making me curious to see if the Alpha Flight cameos pay off. After two meandering issues following Jason Aaron's departure, I was concerned about this series losing its way, but it has more energy and enthusiasm than I recall any X-title supplying in a long time. Despite a few hiccups along the way, Kyle, Yost, and McGuinness keep the streak alive asAmazing X-Men is upeight issues without a dud. With Carlo Barberi taking over penciling duties next issue, it is a shame that McGuinness doesn't go out with his best work, but as mentioned several times already it was far from bad. Ultimately,Amazing X-Men #8serves as both an introduction to Kyle & Yost's take on these characters and to establish the threat of World War Wendigo. The results are an issue that is primarily setup, but it provides enough highlights to make readers excited for what's next. This story looks as though it could be one of those classic X-Men tales though with X-Men and Alpha Flight teaming up, Colossus getting back into this team's rotation, and a classic marvel villain. Amazing X-Men has a real opportunity to offer a glimpse at the numerous popular X-characters that don't quite fit with the franchise's main storyline right now. Unfortunately, this issue breezes straight past moments that should have been worth the price of admission alone - like Kurt and Piotr's reunion - in favor of more screentime for the only X-Man that matters, Wolverine. Compounded with art that would be sub-par from anyone, let alone a powerhouse like Ed McGuinness, and a script that jumps too many times without sticking a landing, and Amazing X-Men #8 totals out to a disappointing issue from a title and creators that have traditionally been much more successful. I really felt let down by this narrative. It was so simple to follow, there were no complications, and it was just a really straightforward, uneventful introduction to a story which from the solicits made it sound like pure fun and excitement. Which in the end it had none of that. Read Full Review

Decent start for new creative team though I don't care for how McGuninness draws Wolverine. Hopefully going forward the series focuses on the other characters more as this was a strength of the first arc. There are already enough Wolvie books on the shelves.

Too much Wolverine and Storm's voice is off (she would say to Iceman what she did). Northstar was a caricature. But this series STILL take a strong step forward.
