Many years ago, Doctor Strange fought in a five thousand-year battle called the War of the Seven Spheres. But what was it? And how did it create the mysterious threat that plagues Strange today? PLUS: A bonus page written by Jonathan Hickman - WHO ARE THE G.O.D.S.?
Once upon a time ‘Doctor Strange' fought the toughest battle of his life and now the consequences of that battle are coming back for their revenge. A rough, tough, and powerfully emotional flashback-style issue lays the groundwork for what comes next perfectly. Doctor Strange #6 is an engaging issue that takes a pre-existing story and spins it into a new direction, which makes for an enjoyable read. Read Full Review
Doctor Strange #6 finally does two things sorely lacking in this series. First, it introduces a memorable villain worthy of facing Doctor Strange. Second, it adds much-needed momentum to a floundering series. This issue is the best of MacKay's run so far. Read Full Review
Doctor Strange #6 reveals the origin story of “General Strange” and what happened to make him into the man he is. While there are some aspects of the comic that are interesting when it comes to depicting moments of General Strange's madness and brutality, the story unfortunately doesn't fully deliver on the concept of Stephen Strange fighting a mystical war for millennia that drives him mad. On top of that, the bonus page tied to the upcoming G.O.D.S. story was sadly underwhelming in this comic. Read Full Review
That was epic!
This was dope as fuck.
This was hands down my favorite issue yet. Reading Stephen's journey of going through this, seemingly, endless war over thousands of years with his desperation increasing and morals being challenges was incredible. This acts as an origin story for the new General Strange character we saw at the end of the previous issue, and it definitely sold me on this character right out of the gate. MacKay has given us some great content with his current Moon Knight run, and it feels like he's really starting to cook up something great now with this Doctor Strange series.
Wow, and I said LAST month's issue felt like Doctor Who!
But I also said last month that that Whovian feeling was not, subjectively, a bad thing, and I stand by that.
The art's decent and the writing is strong. There's plenty of great, weird world-building to make the war feel appropriately magical. There's an unrelenting insight into Stephen's character, showing the step-by-step process that broke him down into the General.
It's all very tragic. But it's not that surprising. If this issue has a fault, it's that you know exactly where it's going from the first few pages. Thus, I won't call it great. But it's still a good chapter in the ongoing story.
Oh, it's the War Doctor.
