For anyone that read Spidey in the '80s, check this out, you're gonna love it. For everyone else, check this out you're gonna love it. If you are one of those people that think "Marvel is stupid for going back to this well so often" well, there's a reason for that.....it's awesome! Highly recommend that this series goes on your subscription list. Read Full Review
Again, this is a fun adventure. If youre a Spider-Man completist or a Marvel Unlimited subscriber, give this one a read. But if youre trying to budget your pull box, you can find better Marvel books for your buck. Read Full Review
Symbiote Spider-Man: Crossroads #1 is an interesting start due to its use of some obscure Marvel characters and elements. In a way, that makes it intriguing since it's unexplored territory -- likely chosen due to this being a prequel that can't mess up continuity -- but it also makes it less accessible. Read Full Review
Ultimately, this issue hints at some potential for a really unique and perhaps even bizarre Spider-Man story, but already sets some concerns as to just how much payoff will come from digging into obscure, unexplored territory. Read Full Review
TL;The Symbiote Spider-Man #1: Crossroads struggles to excite. There is an interesting concept inside this comic, but it happens too late into the book for its impact to be powerful enough. The opening scene is a fun homage to a famous story but lacks the strength to fully grab the attention of the reader. Read Full Review
I was going into this thinking that I'd hate it, but what I got was a pretty fun Spider-Man issue? I'm sure the next 4 issues will be ample time to disappoint me though.
Spidey puts in a busy day defeating Chameleon and d-list evil wizard Moondark before the final scene launches the story proper: He's dumped into a weirdo magic dimension with an angry Hulk. Although this issue is merely a prologue, it's an entertaining prologue with a lot of clever twists. The storytelling, as usual, rubs me the wrong way and keeps me from fully investing. This comic takes a lot of shortcuts both visually and verbally: cruise-control dialogue and art that stays locked inside Greg Land's none-too-spacious wheelhouse.
