We won't get ahead of ourselves and assume every installment in this revival will be as impressive, but even if future installments are a step down in quality, it'll still be more compelling than most other sci-fi and horror titles out there. Read Full Review

    Kabooooom - Matt Morrison Jul 23, 2024

The only cruel thing about this series, apart from the title, is that it is currently scheduled to run for only five issues. I want more! If you enjoy vintage science fiction, you will love Cruel Universe #1. The new Golden Age starts here! Read Full Review

    Capes & Tights - Justin Soderberg Aug 5, 2024

EC Cruel Universe #1 is a grand triumph for Oni Press and a treat to us fans of science fiction. With compelling short stories, amazing artwork and a fresh take on the old school anthologies of older EC Comics, this debut issue sets a new standard for modern comics with classic themes. Cruel Universe and Epitaphs from the Abyss set the tone for EC Comics of today. Read Full Review

Nerd Initiative - Richard Coryell Aug 7, 2024

This book from story one through story four holds the reader's interest. The concept of stories that all end with a "wicked twist is also super cool. Each story has art that is unique to that story, helping to separate each story. Overall, I really enjoyed this book, and will be making sure issue #2 is on my pull list. Read Full Review

Graphic Policy - Logan Dalton Aug 12, 2024

Cruel Universe #1 has one stone-cold classic, a couple solid morality tale thrillers, and one stinker so not a bad batting average for this anthology's first outing. I definitely enjoyed the art and colors in each short story, especially Kano and Artyom Toplin's work. Read Full Review

Monkeys Fighting Robots - Darryll Robson Jul 24, 2024

CRUEL UNIVERSE is a mixed bag of science fiction stories. There are highs and lows, but the lows are still worth reading, as each story has something to offer. There is something for everyone within these pages and the EC ethos of old is present within each story. Read Full Review

I am an avid EC comics reader, I have a decent amount of the deluxe editions with mostly a focus on the old Weird Fantasy and Weird Science. I just say this to give you an idea of how I am judging these. I am comparing them to the legendary classics.

First story: 10/10. What more do I need to say? This was true EC comics. To Matt Kindt and Kanto the artist I say thank you. It was wonderful, I love the twist at the end and the art was perfect for it. I loved every panel. It had that impactful and meaningful message and it wasnt heavy handed. It felt like that was the conclusion I should come to regardless. Honestly almost teared up from it. A perfect story to respect EC and what it stood for.

Story 2 and 3. Not great more

I'm not usually big on anthology books like this. I always feel disappointed the stories are so short. This book still left me wanting more, but in a good way. All the stories had value and my favorite was the Space Ship one and the Fountain of Youth one. I really enjoyed this.
