THE GOOD:

-This series is just great. Even the weakest issue felt super strong.

-This art is perfect.

-Another reason why this is my favorite DoX book is that it easily has the most interesting and memorable villains.

-I cannot wait for Percy's Wolverine. The character's so well written here.

-Kid Omega's a great character. He could easily be super annoying, but he's written really well here.

-This script is super good.

-The scene with the death of the assassin was super effective.

-The political thriller nature of this comic is so good.

THE BAD:

-The graphics felt really weak here. They were just unnecessary word-dumps, if you ask me. more

THE GOOD:

-This was fine, I guess. It was what I expected.

-As someone who's mildly familiar with these characters, I enjoyed them here.

-The graphics were good here. They did their job, which was solidifying/expanding on the world

-I liked the last panel. It made me chuckle.

THE BAD:

-I'm not a fan of the art at all. The faces just look really off.

-Man, this issue was slow. I wasn't at all interested until the last page or so.

-Oh dear, already the villain is super bland and uninteresting. more

New Mutants #3 is essentially a different issue entirely from the previous two issues. The previous comics focused on what I would consider to be a team of classic characters from the original New Mutants and Generation X from the 90s. This issue follows newer characters that I'm not as familiar with.

The team consists of Armor, Glob, Sage, Boom-Boom, Maxime, and Manon. I only recognize a few of these characters. The characterization they are given is totally forgettable. Even longtime characters like Boom-Boom are bland as ever.


The team assembles to take on a seemingly arbitrary mission to act as missionaries and attempt to convince other mutants to join Krakoa. If you're thinking this is kind of redundant and overlaps with what we've seen in Marauders and the recently ended Fantastic Four/X-Men Crossover, I'd agree.

I didn't like this issue at all. The premise seems redundant and the comic has one of the most groan-inducing second halves I've seen in a long time.


The team begins looking for known mutants that are not on Krakoa. They discover that Beak and Angel aren't among the ranks. Upon investigation, it's discovered that the couple has not migrated due to Beak's father dealing with an incurable illness and likely on his deathbed. Armor sneaks some Krakoan flowers to Beaks family which cures the disease.

While this is happening Angel and Beak's children get cornered by some Mutant Supremacists and held at gunpoint. These guys also have power dampeners that prevent the heroes from accessing their powers.

The third act of the book seemed totally contrived to add action but came off as contrived. We really have Mutant Supremacist randomly showing up in Nebraska the same day that the New mutants arrive? The random group also has power dampeners, which make them a match for trained X-Men?

Get The Fuck Outta Here!

It was nice to see Beak and Angel again. Both characters had fallen down the memory hole. I just wish they showed up in a better story. I kept thinking why does this book exist at all. I state all the time that I'm late on reviews. I'm backlogged several issues of New Mutants. After reading this issue I dropped the title from my pull list.


Dawn of X has become a thoroughly bloated line of comics and the diminishing returns can be seen in the declining sales. There are better titles out there, don't waste your money. This series won't pay off for another year or two, if ever.

Prelude:
New Mutants has been one of Dawn of X's stronger titles but without Hickman writing this issue, let's see how Brisson goes.

The Good:
I do like seeing some more on what's happening at Krakoa and this issue does that a bit.

It's nice to see some of the flower drugs are being used here.

I liked the infographics as well.

Flaviano does some nice art in this issue.

The Bad:
It does break the story up a bit too much and that's not a good thing.

Cliche villains are cliche.

Conclusion:
This is a much more grounded issue that uses the devices HoX/PoX setted up. However, it is quite a big departure from the current story at hand so I'll need to see how these two areas play out first. more

I dearly love the premise this issue starts with: Compassionate, friendship-driven check-ins with less-famous mutants. It shows a nice slice of day-to-day Krakoa business, and it achieves a tone DoX hasn't really touched on yet: heartwarming.

But then it all goes down the crapper at the end thanks to the arrival of a dishwater-dull antagonist, drawn in the unique style that I almost believed Flaviano had put behind him. (Namely, a roided-up, colorblind pimp who would get cut from Street Fighter for being too tacky).

I'd love to blame COVID-19 for lack of reviews of the Dawn of X line of stories but the truth is that the current run of X-Men comics is a mixed bag and there are better books out there.

Marauder's #3 feels like a setup or filler issue with the bulk of the book following Sebastian and the newly resurrected Shinobi Shaw, his son. I hadn't seen Shinobi since the '90s. I always thought he was a cool character I just wish he showed back up in a better book.

Sebastian spends this issue reacclimating Shinobi to the world and the Hellfire Trading Company. Shinobi, still coming to terms with the situation openly speculates whether he still wants to kill his father.

There is a lot of plotting and foreshadowing in the issue that will probably pay off down the line. I hate to say that the book is a waste of money but a lot of this could have been done in the background with a more interesting story being in the actual comic.

Michele Bandini does a great job on figures and Federico's colors are also standout. I liked the stark reds and blacks. Aside from that there isn't much else going on. The artists don't get much to do other than draw characters moving from scene to scene spewing endless exposition. If this was my introduction to the series I'd be hardpressed to keep it on my pull list. It's not the worst comic on the shelves but it's the sort of book that will leave readers questioning the $3.99 they are dropping every month on the title. more

Okay, I think I understand this series now. It's not the core DoX narrative that its flagship title might suggest. Instead, this is "Scott Summers And His Mutant Pals Explore The Hickman Idea Factory." Every issue presents a new story seed capable of supporting at least a miniseries. Hordeculture, the seed du jour, is an audaciously absurd cross between the Golden Girls and Bond villains. I love it. The art's hitting a high-water mark here, too.

But I see the ratings are running very hot and cold. I have a hypothesis as to why: I think Mr. Hickman is better at writing one of the common genders than the other, and in this issue, the balance of dialogue runs contrary to his bias. It's a problem, but one I can forgive -- although maybe I shouldn't.

This is load-bearing artwork holding up a threadbare script, but I enjoyed it. $5.99 is a lot to ask for an issue that reads like a minimalist, by-the-numbers first chapter of a generic magical girl manga when $11.99 will get you the whole first volume of any magical girl manga you want. The art, the feeling of being distinct from all the other Marvel books, and the novelty of seeing where this fits into the new Ultimate stuff make it worth sticking around. The plot setup is fine while the characterization is weak, but this book deserves some time to do its thing. Even if it is just standard young X-Men manga/magical-girl style, that would by no means be the worst thing in Marvel's lineup right now, and I would welcome it. more

This was a fun issue as a whole, but I do think the execution could have been a lot better. The banter between Peter and Miles is entertaining, but I also think it can become a little much at times. Though, I do like it overall. The biggest factor that drags down my score a bit is the constant shift between "then" and "now." The stories in both times were good, but I felt like the story kept unnecessarily jumping around. Hopefully Weisman can improve upon that within the next few issues. As for Ramos, I think he did a really solid job here. All things considered, I believe there's a lot of potential for this series to get better and I hope it does. more

While the banter between the Peter & Miles is undeniably fun, this debut suffers from a lackluster plot and a very questionable narrative justification for why this series even exists.

Greg Wesiman wrote some really fun dialogue between these two heroes. Their witty exchanges and friendly jabs provide a lighthearted tone and had me giggling most of the way, save for the slightly cringe talk of picking up girls in a college coffee shop. However, the story itself felt uninspired. The two decide to just “hang-out” once a week to chat? Ummm, ok. Can that reasoning really sustain an ongoing series?

The issue’s conflict unfolds predictably, offering little in the way of surprises or tension. @ramosland’s art is undeniably energetic, with dynamic layouts and action sequences that leap of the page. His signature style perfectly captures the movement of the web-slinging heroes. However, the non-action sequences felt a bit boring.

Overall, this was a fun but ultimately shallow team-up issue that feels like it could have happened in either of their own series. While the interactions between Peter and Miles are a delight, the lack of a compelling story and questionable thesis held this back for me, especially considering the awesome work Cody Ziglar is doing for Miles’ in his solo ongoing. more
