Alfred - alongside Gordon & Joker - is the only essential character of every portrayal of Batman's mythos. Killing him in such an anti-climatic fashion, without previous "character work" or diegetic-dialogical preparation, doesn't represent a brilliant estrangement, or some sort of Freudian "unheimliche": it simply attempts to delegitimize the narrative foundations of this - Batman's - literary micro-cosm. |
