Kill Your Darlings is a story for all of those who never lost their sense of wonder in the face of whatever the world throws at them. It's both fantastical and deeply grounded with art that serves the storytelling in a way that reminds me of just how powerful comics as a means of storytelling can be. This is one of those special books that comes along every once in a while, and I can say with certainty the audience for it is universal, the story is hauntingly timeless, and the emotions are raw and real.

The Sacrificers continues to be weird in all the best ways, and between the stellar art and existential dialog, I hope this book is around for a while because this is the flavor of weirdness the world needs more of.

Arcade Kings is the best video game adaptation of a video game that never existed.

Battle Chasers #12 is phenomenal, let's get that out of the way first. If you want to know if this book is good or not, yes, 100%, it's great. If you love Sword and Sorcery, you are going to think this is a fantastic issue.

Conan The Barbarian comic from Titan Comics is everything you want from a Conan story. Conan lives, Conan loves, Conan slays. I am content. 

Miss Truesdale and The Fall of Hyperborea showcase why Mignola is not only a spectacular writer who elevates storytelling with each new tale he weaves, but that the lore his work encompasses and inspires is nothing short of timeless.

Hunt.Kill.Repeat continues to be a standout book as it effortlessly blends classic mythology in a new and exciting way that is both action-packed and deeply character driven. In a landscape where stories about gods can get very one-dimensional the fractured facets of these deities are put on full display and each page turn seems to be driving to some great tragedy that will shake the heavens and hells to their core.

Where Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. 1957: From Below shines is in its ability to give newly arriving and longtime fans of the Mignolaverse a B.P.R.D. story that is equally something they love, while being something totally unexpected and fun at the same time. You know there is going to be a threat worthy of Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. but finding out what that threat is and getting to be along for that ride is the reason that fans keep coming back to this franchise time and time again.

The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos shines in its ability to take you on an adventure in a world where you don't know the rules and still make you feel like you have been here for years and can't wait to hang out with your favorite lunch lady who may or may not be The Gill-man's aunty and also a super scientist who only works with lunchmeat and roly-poly bugs.

The first issue of Titan Comics Conan The Barbarian gave me everything I wanted from a Conan story. The art is primal and energetic in a way that takes you along for the adventure. The story is brilliantly balanced between narration and dialog making it feel like the classic Conan stories I love. And the plot of this first issue takes you through some of the best things about the Hyperborean age firmly anchoring this book in my must-read category if you are a fan of Sword and Sorcery. 

Klik Klik Boom #2 is a non-stop action-packed romp stuffed with charming chaos characters, treacherously twisted traps, and an adorable baby bunny named Beatrix!

Purr Evil starts off strong with some great action beats and the looming feeling that something sinister is on the horizon.

The Sacrificers is set in a weird world full of strange creatures with a wild setup that has unanswered questions piled high like mountains… but it's off to an absolutely fantastic start!

Arcade Kings keeps surprising me in delightful ways as it continues to be that story I want to drop my quarters into. It's bright, flashy, and has a plot that feels perfectly juggled between the quick and quirky storytelling and the S-ranked super-move sequential sequences.

I have poured my heart out in this article and told you next to nothing about the issue and I think that's okay. Because I've waited more than half my life for this issue of Battle Chasers and I'm not disappointed.

Those who are versed in the lore of the Hellboy Universe are going to find the contents of Miss Truesdale and the Fall of Hyperboria to be nothing short of a revelatory addition to the ever-weaving threads of a world full of wonder, horror, and spellbinding mythology that is as timeless as the characters who drive it.

The charming diablerie of the plot coupled with the bright and colorful art makes We Fight In Hell feel like someone using a box of crayons to journal their existential crisis of faith across the pages of an ancient skin-bound grimoire used for communing with the lords of hell.

Everything about Panya: The Mummy's Curse, from the interior cover art to the folktales of old to the events unfolding across each page, echoes with rich worldbuilding and a deeper secret lore that feels as timeless as the sands of a desert that was ancient before the first cities of man were even conceived of.

Where the tension and action of Under the Influence shines is in its carefully curated dialog. The whole book is full of layered conversations that feel as manufactured and polished as the biggest influencer's aspirational posts about coffee or pampas grass. I hate this book… and I love it.

It was a good comic, but the art did not dazzle as much and the story did not grip me. The arc needed to have this moment for sure but the whole issue just kinda lacked the sparkle that the first two issues had. Hopefully, this is just where the story catches its breath for the next epic adventure moment.As all my gamers can attest, you can't always roll critical hits.

Hellboy 1957 Fearful Symmetry is a cozy and quiet creature-of-the-week story with some really great pulp moments, beautiful set pieces, and dialog that draws the reader into the conversation. Littruature lovers of the classic pulp stories and long-time fans of the Hellboy universe will both delight in this offering from Dark Horse comics.

The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos #1 is like listening to a jam band just starting to find their groove. All the songs and musical ideas bleed into each other and you have no idea what you are listening to or what is coming next. You come away from the whole thing with a smile, enjoying the experience and looking forward to the next time that group of artists gets together so you can see what they cook up. This book feels exactly like that, if you could condense it, add some rad colors, and get it to adhere to the pages of a comic book.

Arcade Kings feels like sitting at your favorite arcade game with a bucket full of quarters, a sour slushy drink, and some epic music blaring through your headphones. It's as much a great comic to read as it is a feel-good experience.

Hunt.Kill.Repeat is the perfect example of what happens when a creative team clicks so well together and each member is bringing their A-game to the page.

if you love the Hellboy universe and the interconnected stories that spring from it, Miss Truesdale And The Fall of Hyperborea is a must-have for your collection. Not only is it a phenomenal weird fiction tale that I'm sure will stand the test of time but it is clearly another thread in the beautiful tapestry that Mike Mignola has created with the Hellboy universe.

Something Epic continues to parallel the harsh realities we have all been forced to face from time to time and the characters we use to help us escape those stressors made manifest. Szymon Kudranski provides one of the most intelligently crafted commentaries on how we as people navigate this thing called life that I have ever seen.

I've waited over 20 years for Battle Chasers to return and I can say with zero hesitation that it was worth the wait. The story, character development, and world-building is a masterclass in sword and sorcery elevating the genre while at the same time making it uniquely its own.

If anyone ever played the "Can you make the name of a movie a porn parody name game at a pizza shop after a day of exploring dungeons and slaying dragons this feels like those fond memories turned into an amusingly illustrated adventure, in the best possible way.

Deep Cuts #2 is a powerful exploration of the will of a creator overcoming expectation, self-imposed stumbling blocks, and depression… economic and otherwise.

The Shadows of Thule is everything great about the Sword and Sorcery genre with rich and haunting lore, complex characters, and beautifully illustrated moments that stick with you long after you have turned the page. This is a modern classic that is sure to delight readers for ages to come.

Big Ugly reads like a collection of minimalist paintings that tell a story of anxiety, depression, and family drama that you can't let go of because it feeds you as much as it breaks you down.

K. Briggs's Macbeth is the kind of work I could see the super cool art teacher we all looked up to in high school doing during lunch. It's for sure a telling of Macbeth, but it's done so in a way that has you turning the pages just to see what comes next.

Pet Peeves does this thing where it lets you get comfortable. You kinda fall into the same rut of chaos and frustration that the protagonist deals with in her day-to-day life. You become part of the fabric of the story and you see all the things she can clearly see about herself that are pushing others away but you also empathize with the want to be your own true self. All of this makes the horror weirdness, when it eventually comes, even more powerful and it elevates the whole book into something really special.

Weapons of the Metabarons is a prime example of everything that makes The Incal Universe a brilliant landscape of multidimensional weird fiction storytelling. The creative trip of Jodorowsky, Janjetov, and Charest weaves a story that transcends all eight dimensions and leaves you excited to have experienced the ride.

Nervosa is a work that teaches as much as it tells in a memoir-like dark humor-laced romp through the formative years of a woman who is failed by every system and still somehow managed to find her coping mechanisms and rise to her own standards and make something great. It's dark, it's funny, it's sad, and it's reaffirming all at the same time.

Project Riese #1 is a slow burn that is clearly building toward what I hope is a massive fast paced exploration of an abandoned wonderland of pseudo-science centers and horror-filled hallways, in the search for stolen gold and survival. 

Mage and the Endless Unknown is the kind of book I wish I could go back in time and give to the younger version of me, just so I could have this strange story of magic and horror for longer in my life.

Under the Influence #1 feels timely and real in a way that it could be happening anywhere that people with a WiFi connection are doing things for views and those who don't quite get it are getting mad about it.

Artist Liana Kangas and writer Matthew Erman come together to create a strange weird multidimensional space of emotional exploration and outer-dimensional entities that sparkle in their own unique ways. The whole yarn is very existential and dreamlike and will leave you thinking about the nature of relationships and what one means to oneself, others, and the space between spaces.

Something about this book scares me, and it's not the clawed monsters. There is an undertone throughout that feels a little too “ripped from the headlines” familiar, in a way that pulls me out of the story and makes me worry that the survivalists are going to end up being more evil and hate-filled than the clawed creatures. It's such a cool setup that I hope I'm wrong.

Dying Star is a framed story, if the picture was removed from the frame, and sat in another room, and the frame was a living eight-dimensional entity that planted the tree that would one day drop a seed that would in turn grow into a forest that was cut down to make the paper that the picture was made from. All of this is happening, of course, while there are sword fights and spaceships. It's spellbinding and I loved every nanosecond of it from start to finish.
