The Batman Universe - Gareth Turner Jun 14, 2024

All in all, this is a brilliant opening issue that shows the creative team's skill in not only making an entertaining comic, but also intelligently exploring ideas about wealth, industry, and power. Not to mention some of the best art we've ever seen in an Elseworlds story. Do not miss this one. Read Full Review

Getting these Batman period pieces are a lot of fun, and the team explodes onto the scene by showcasing a heart-pounding heist and a breathtaking entry into the Batman lore. Starting with almost a cliffhanger in the opening pages has me excited to see how everybody will tie together in the coming issues. Read Full Review

    AIPT - Lukas Shayo Jun 11, 2024

It'll be hard for anyone who enjoyed Gotham by Gaslight not to like Gotham by Gaslight: The Kryptonian Age #1. Every character genuinely feels like they belong in the same sorrowful world, and the dialogue plays into those very same themes. Issue #1 is essentially two issues already, making it undoubtedly worth the cost, time, and attention. Just as Gotham has always been dark, Gotham by Gaslight always plays on the same Victorian atmosphere brilliantly, and The Kryptonian Age is no exception. Read Full Review

Geek Dad - Ray Goldfield Jun 11, 2024

This is a wildly ambitious first issue that packs a lot into its thirty or so pagesmaybe too much. But it does its job of getting me interested in spades. This has always been one of the most ambitious DC Elseworlds, and it's full of potential for a longer series. Read Full Review

The Super Powered Fancast - Deron Generally Jun 11, 2024

Fernandez beautifully captures the dark, desolate and gilded world of Gotham in this issue. I love the visual contrast between high society and the reality of the streets. The action is also beautifully detailed. Read Full Review

Overall, Batman: Gotham by Gaslight The Kryptonian Age #1 is a thrilling first issue that sets the stage for a clash between two iconic characters in a unique Elseworlds setting. Pick it up if you're a Batman fan or if you enjoy Elseworlds stories. If you haven't read the original Gotham by Gaslight, it might be worth checking that out first for a deeper understanding of the world and characters. Read Full Review

But Why Tho? - William Tucker Jun 11, 2024

The sense of scale is dazzling in the writing and stunning visuals. Batman: Gotham By Gaslight — The Kryptonian Age #1 can drag and take its time to sink its teeth into the situation, but the second half is filled with adventure and character interactions. Read Full Review

Dark Knight News - Carl Bryan Jun 11, 2024

I'm no Johnny Cash, but the train that the League of Shadows is assaulting Batman on is a pretty bloody mess. I can't wait to see how THIS Batman gets out of his current state of staring down Talia's blade. Batman: Gotham By Gaslight: The Kryptonian Age #1 was clever, so let's see how the introduction of some new wrinkles leaves this universe on the edge of its seat. Read Full Review

    Batman-News - Chip Ross Jun 11, 2024

I love Elseworlds. Am I happy it's back? Yes, absolutely. Am I worried? Also yes. It's fairly obvious to see the cash-grab possibilities inherent with bringing back an old imprint. People buying into it for nostalgia as well as getting new fans onboard is a sure fire way to make money without necessarily having to make it good. This first issue was good, and if it keeps up, will certainly instil a confidence for this revamped title. Read Full Review

    Graphic Policy - Brett Jun 12, 2024

The original Gotham by Gaslight is a modern classic. It'd be difficult for Batman: Gotham by Gaslight The Kryptonian Age #1 to come close to it. It's not bad in a vacuum but for the hyped return of Elseworlds as well as this beloved setting, it doesn't hit it out of the park. Where the issue, and where Elseworlds will have trouble, is that alternate takes on worlds and characters are a dime a dozen at this point. It's not special like it used to. Indicating the line of comics is a solid choice, but, much like this debut, they'll have a difficult road ahead to stand out. Read Full Review

    ComicBook.com - Christian Hoffer Jun 12, 2024

On its own, the comic is an enjoyable pulpy read, but this new miniseries is a bit of a stepdown from the heralded original Gotham by Gaslight and its equally enjoyable sequel. Read Full Review

Weird Science - Gabe Hernandez Jun 12, 2024

Batman: Gotham By Gaslight - The Kryptonian Age #1 brings readers back to the Gotham By Gaslight Elseworld, with a setup that implies Earth and Krypton have a hidden history. The art and basic premise feel authentic to the Victorian Age, so Gotham By Gaslight fans will enjoy the aesthetic, but readers will be disappointed with the almost total lack of anything Kryptonian in this first issue to get you excited.
